Ayelet Waldman is the author of the novel "Daughter's Keeper."

She is also a vapid, selfish monster.

I loved this article so much that I showed it to my husband and had him read it for himself.
I have seen too many wives come to focus their attentions solely on the children. They go so far as to almost resent their husbands for working to care for the family.
I think this author describes how she would feel if she lost a child or her husband exactly as I too would feel. This woman isn't spoiled, she is still in love with her man after 12 years. That is nothing to be shameful of or to be criticized for.
I grew up in a home with a father who abused my mother and a mother with anger issues. I can imagine that the joy I have found finally after all these years might have come sooner if I had experienced as a child the way a loving husband and wife should act together.
This is not to say that women shouldn't love their children too. What the author is saying is that women begin to feel 'in love' with the children as a replacement for the way they once felt about their husbands.
I could never ever replace my husband as the center of my universe, not even with children that he and I created. The final statement is the clincher. What more beautiful gift could we give our children than the blessing of finding the love of their lives just like mommy and daddy did?
For all the women who disagree with this, I believe that it is out of resentment or jealousy for the author for having such a wonderful partner. I wish everyone could be as fortunate as she and I are to have been blessed as we have been.
