Western North Carolina is beautiful. You will be surrounded by hippies though. Forest City is in the Asheville sphere, and you won't find a more hippie city anywhere. I go up there for amusement on occasion. Hippies can be fun if you don't take them too seriously and if they don't take themselves too seriously.

I actually like the old hippies - it's the neo faux-hippies I cannot bear. The old hips have mostly settled down in their little enclaves like Asheville and run co-ops, art galleries, knick-knack shops, and bookstores. They are pleasant people to chat with or hang around for a day or two. We live in Atlanta and visit Asheville on occasion for a hippie-fix. And you're right - Western NC is beautiful.
