ULTIMATE MARCH MADNESS MOMENT 2005
LONDON OIL TRADERS KICK GREENPEACE BUTT
by R. Bastiat
Greenpeace activists had their heads handed to them by some ferocious oil traders in the City of London when the eco-terrorists crashed the International Petroleum Exchange and briefly disrupted open-outcry trading in the oil futures pit. The well-organized intruders succumbed to a spontaneous counter-attack by their outraged targets and beat a hasty retreat.
The trespassers said they were trying to paralyze oil trading as a protest against what they termed the inadequacy of the Kyoto Protocol on global warming and the alleged contribution of petroleum to climate changes. They stormed the trading floor, blowing whistles and sounding distress alarms to drown out the traders' voices.
Activity in the Brent oil futures pit was suspended for about an hour, but electronic trading on the exchange continued unabated, so the market as a whole suffered no noticeable disruption. Oil futures rose to a three-week high that afternoon.
The environmental storm troopers did not fare as well as the energy futures market, however. The protestors had their back sides kicked right out onto the street by the feisty traders -- most of whom appeared to be aggressive young men in their early 20s. "They pulled a metal bookcase down on our heads," a stunned Greenpeace official told reporters. "They were trying to use that to push us back out, so that was the moment we decided to retreat for everyone's safety."
According to one protestor, the traders "followed the guys into the lobby and kept kicking and punching them there....

Is this a current story? I seem to recall reading this story a month or two ago.

The invisible hand of capitalism!
"They pulled a metal bookcase down on our heads," a stunned Greenpeace official told reporters."
LOL! It's a shame they didn't shove it up your. . .!!
I was about to ask the same question. This is either a rerun of the story, or a rerun of the same stupid Greenpeace activity.
Stupid old hippies were no match for these meat-eaters.
Regarding your tagline, I have to disagree with Terry. I thought Election Night 2002 was better, but we all have our favorites!
This was a bad move on Greenpeace's part. Under normal circumstances interfering with floor traders during market hours is asking for a pounding, but job-related anxieties likely made the International Petroleum Exchange floor traders even touchier than normal. For months the exchange had been maneuvering to close the floor and move to computerized trading exclusively--thereby putting the floor traders out of business. Weeks before the Greenpeace invasion the IPE had eliminated the morning floor trading session, leaving the floor traders only an afternoon session to make a living. As a result, Greenpeace put on their street theater in front of a bunch of really PO'd guys looking to make a buck before their jobs went away. The most amusing thing is the absolute shock expressed by the protesters. Clueless.
Hopefully they will go blockade some country's sea ports and get their ship sunk again. They are nothing but hypocrates, burning up fuel like mad to go protest burning fuel. If they would stay home and stick to commenting at DU they could be part of the solution, not part of the problem they claim.
