PORTLAND -- A reporter for Willamette Week, the Portland alternative weekly, has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting.
Nigel Jaquiss exposed a sexual relationship between former Gov. Neil Goldschmidt and an underage girl while Goldschmidt was Portland's mayor in the 1970s. The 14-year-old girl was his children's babysitter.
The revelation drove Goldschmidt, a high-level consultant and power broker, from public life.
Tears came to Jaquiss' eyes when he heard the announcement Monday. He said it was a terrific honor he never thought would be his.
Jaquiss is a former Wall Street stock trader who moved to Portland eight years ago to pursue a new lifestyle.
Willamette Week, which is marking its 30th anniversary, has carved a niche for itself in Oregon journalism. It contains the kind of fare expected in an "alternative" weekly -- such as reviews of rock bands, where to find cheap food, and a column on Portland's gay and lesbian community. But it has also been establishing a name for itself as a newspaper that enjoys going after hard news.

There was a body count from the surfacing of Neils "affair"(that was what The Oregonian calls child molestation by a liberal). But too many escaped with their careers undamaged; the present governor, multnomah county sheriff, exmayor of portland, sec. of state, state attny. general. They were all involved in the active coverup in some manner. And, interesting enough, Neil was sec. of transportation under Carter and none of this surfaced even though Neil was "affairing" her up until he moved to D.C.

Ya know, I agree this needed to be told in order to expose a pedophile, but Pulitzer? Sorry I just think there are probably better stories with a little bit more effect on the world than some pathetic politician bangin his babysitter. Guess the bar for great journalism has come down a few notches. Isn't this voted on by his peers? Kinda lets you know what has happened in the MSM, huh? Wonder what was runner up? Some guy humpin a sheep?

The ww may be liberal, but there are no sacred cows when it comes to its reporting.

The WW 'series'ly got a real Pulitzer?
They really should get an award for exposing the Oregonian of the leftist/lib/Dem mouthpiece they were in this story.
The Oregonian gave Goldschmidt every opportunity to explain himself on his terms, plus they at first classified the RAPE as an 'AFFAIR'.

WW is not simply liberal, it is anarchistic even borderline subversive. This is their one shot at some time in the sun. They are otherwise no better than the "other" daily dead fish-wrapper/parakeet cage liner.
Best that Neil never surfaces again. Now if we can just do something - anything - about the current governor and high ranking police officials who knew about it but were complicit in cover-up by their collective silence.

Interesting that when reading about Goldschmidt's woes not once did I see "Neil Goldschmidt, former Democrat Governor". Always it was just "former Governor". If he was a Republican there is no doubt in my mind that all news stories would have mentioned that he was a Republican. And some say that the press is not biased.

Thanks for the ping. I wonder how long the reporters or editors at the Organogronian knew about this "affair" but decided it was not "newsworthy."
