With Piero Marini running the liturgy, who knows? Maybe the Pope specified what he wanted at his Funeral Mass? Or maybe the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis is very specific.
My pastor has just informed me that for our solemn high Requiem on Friday, we're going to use red vestments. The ceremonial manual is very precise about the difference in rubrics between a requiem and an ordinary SMH, but I want to check again to make sure it doesn't insist on black.
Even so, I can understand why papal funerals might be an exception. Last night on EWTN, Fr. Mitch Pacwa said something silly about the pope's red chasuble: that it signifies his succession to the (martyred) Apostles. I feel certain the real reason is to signify the Holy Spirit -- even more clear when you recall that before VII, the popes used only red, white, and gold as liturgical colors.
We're going to get our red mass.
