In all fairness, pets in general are not "useful" in any kind of utilitarian sense. That being said, after work today, I'm taking my Golden Retriever for a swim. Him not me.

My dog is useful in that he lets me know how easy it is to be happy with nothing much. Something to eat, some shelter, a soft bed and someone to toss his tennis ball for him.

Our pet is useful. He is a 13 pound rat/chihuahua. He goes berserk whenever any stranger comes up on the porch. Since we have young children, we don't leave the weapons loaded. I figure the 'dog alarm' will give me enough time to load up if need be. People think the yappy dogs are a joke, but they make good 'alert' dogs
