What Did Sandy Steal?
World Net Daily ^ | 4-7-2005 | William Rusher

Sandy Berger was director of the National Security Center in the Clinton administration, and as such President Clinton's top adviser on all national security matters. On Sept. 2, 2003, in a secure reading room at the National Archives building in Washington, Berger was reviewing classified documents from the Clinton era, in his capacity as Clinton's point man in providing relevant materials to the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks.

One such document was a copy of a White House "after-action" report that he himself had commissioned, while still National Security director, to assess the Clinton administration's performance in responding to the so-called millennium terrorist threat before New Year's 2000. (I am relying throughout on reports from the New York Times.) Berger put the document in his pocket and walked out of the National Archives with it.

Exactly a month later, on Oct. 2, 2003, in another visit to the Archives, he stuffed four copies of other versions of the same report into his clothes (some reports have specified his socks) and again walked out of the building with them.

At his own office later that day, Berger cut three of the copies into small pieces. Two days later staff members at the Archives took the matter up with him. He said the removals were inadvertent, and returned the two remaining copies of the report, but said nothing about the three he had destroyed.

Now that he is an ADMITTED THEIF it is more than appropriate to demand to know what was in the versions he destroyed.

NOTE: he previously said they were COPIES (as in exact copies) - but now that we know he is a liar, who else might have known what was in there?

Thanks for posting. I read this article in the WashTimes today as it was published there too.

.......Sandy Berger may belong on the roll of those, like Susan McDougall and Webster Hubbell, who have accepted criminal penalties to protect Bill Clinton from the truth. And what Clinton failed to do to defend the nation against terrorists may join his lifetime medical records (which the media generously never demanded) among those interesting things about Slick Willie that the American people will never be privileged to know.......

Scumbag.

My best guess is that this stuff is/was related to the whole truth of the "curveball" matter, which was contemporaneous and now has been belatedly revealed in a recent intel "report".

There's only a couple of reasons why people steal...but the underlying theme IS ALWAYS....I want it and don't want you to have it.

When you work for Bubba, you OWE Bubba!! Sandy himself had nothing to gain or lose....so it had to be in someone else's interest...and that leads to Bubba!!

The guy belongs in jail for what we KNOW he did. It's what we don't know that bothers me.

The whole thing -- and Sandy's "punishment" -- are beyond belief.

S@@@. I'd get in more trouble for failing to check out a library book.

It says it all about the Clinton Kool-Aid drinkers that would rather rot in prison than suffer some other fate...to protect treasonous Billy. Too bad real justice was never delivered to the perpetrator -- the travesty of the century...and yet he continues to appear on behalf of the United States which is equally disgusting. Whatever happened to principles in this country?

As with all Clinton related events, one must ask - Why now? Suddenly Sandy has confessed and the deals are being cut. This week will be all Pope all the time. What a coincidence....

"The whole thing -- and Sandy's "punishment" -- are beyond belief."

I'm guessing that prosecutors don't think they can get a DC jury to convict, given the 90 plus percentage of Dims in the jury pool. It usually takes only one person to hang a jury if he's sufficiently stubborn. That's a problem with most criminal matters in DC.

A little song, a little dance,

some secret papers down your pants.

Sandy Burger is being portrayed as a lovable, bumbling clown by his defenders. So why was he heading such an important agency?

Remember folks Sandy Berger was an adviser to John Kerry in his race to the white house until reports revealed Berger is the subject of a criminal investigation over the disappearance of terrorism documents.

A statement from John Kerry goes like this"Sandy Berger is my friend, and he has tirelessly served his nation with honor and distinction. I respect his decision to step aside as an adviser to this campaign until this matter is resolved."WOW, I am glad that Kerry never made it to the White house or we would have had the Clinton years all over again with his criminal friends running the government.

This crook Sandy Berger should be in jail.

The theft took place in DC, but where did Berger destroy the documents? I don't know whether he lives in DC, Maryland or Virginia.

I think the plea bargin is an attempt to make this whole thing go away rather than publicize it more. Just the Republicrats keeping the wheels of government rolling.

I hate the way the MSM has whitewashed and confused this issue.

To say he took 5 "copies" of the same documents makes most people scratch their head. Why, after all, would the NSC have 5 copies of the same document or Berger take 5 copies of the same document?

The answer is they were NOT Copies. They were each unique documents that differed from one another because each had different comments and notations from different people on them.

Obviously, Berger destroyed the ones most damaging and returned the other two. I had to read about six different papers to determine this as it was not clear in reading the NYT or the WaPO.

The Wall Street Journal said that they called the administration and specifically asked whether or not the archives still possessed copies of the documents Berger destroyed. A spokesman (named in the report but I forget his name) said that they did, and that copies of all the documents were given to the investigating committee.

I'm still not sure whether I believe this. Obviously Berger took "copies" of several different drafts of the original document, possibly containing handwritten notes and deletions. He destroyed three, presumably the most incriminating, and returned two.

The problem here is that "copies" is an ambiguous word. It can either mean an exact xerox copy or it can mean five different versions of a document. And it can mean five copies of the original or it can mean five originals.

In forensic or scholarly work, you need to see the ORIGINALS of documents. Copies, even good copies, are not the same thing.

I think it's time to demand that a committee of politically impartial scholars, with security clearance if necessary, should visit the National Archives and visually inspect these documents which they say they still have. Do they actually still have five different versions of the document in their original form, as they claim?

Frankly I doubt it.

The security personnel at the Archives have already proven that they cannot be trusted, since when they learned that Berger was stealing documents they did NOT first inform the Justice Department or the FBI. They put in a call to BERGER'S LAWYER and told him what had happened.

Is that the usual protocol in a national security matter?

This affair cannot be permitted to stand unresolved. Some of the gutless Republicans in congress need to speak out and demand an accounting.
