The 2.6 kernels refuse to install on most of the Compaq Armadas from that era (including my own), but I haven't heard of a problem with the IBM notebooks. In the case of the Armadas, we have to install the alternate 2.4 kernel.

Regarding the memory, try to upgrade the 96 if you are going to run KDE. Last week I upgraded from 128 to 160 on one laptop, and 128 to 256 on another. I would say the sweet number is somewhere between 128 and 160, and anything more is bonus to be used for caching. With only 128 MB I was consistently seeing use of the swap partition but never with 160 or 256 (having Firefox and Evolution loaded most of the time).

Your 233 Mhz PIII won't be a screamer but it will be OK. My Armadas are 400 Mhz (one a PII and the other a Celeron), and really don't seem all that much slower while browsing than my new 2200 Sempron desktop. They do boot way slower, however. The difference in screen size between the laptops and desktop is more noticeable than the speed (while browsing).
