could certainly understand the Pope being careful to not have a Jewish star on an ambulance which would follow him deep into Palestinian territory

Jeruselum is not "deep into Palestinian terriroty". Even before the '67 war it was a divided city, half in Jordan, half in Israel. Your basic point is well taken though, as the top of the wailling wall, which the pope visited, is a Mosque that has been the source of violance for those visiting the wall in the past.
