A quote from the article you linked to. If anything, the party, or at least Republican politicians, are slowly moving left. I could give several examples, but that would divert from the thread - just search FR for illegal immigrants/border security, increased government, increased taxes, etc. and you'll find plenty of threads dealing with those issues.

This makes me wonder why people like Dick Cheney's daughter, Finkelstein, etc. come out of the closet or define themselves by their sexuality, and why some in the GOP try to make every political issue into a religious issue. Are they trying to use religious issues like homosexuality to fragment the GOP into a religious segment and a politically conservative segment?

If they (both the homosexuals and those in the GOP who view everything as a religious issue) keep doing this, that is what will happen, and with a fragmented GOP, the liberals will waltz right into the White House and right into control of the House and the Senate.

You got that right. The libs have been on a witch-hunt to smoke out gay Republicans because they are too dense and bigoted to realize that gays can (and have the right) to agree with the Republican party on most issues.

The gay Republicans I've known care about a lot more than prancing around in crazy outfits shrieking about gay marriage and trying to make it a bigger issue than terrorism, economic policies, etc. Otherwise, they would be libs!

This is true. Anybody with any common sense would be more worried about terrorism, the economy, reigning in the government, etc., than this.

Unfortunately you have people on both sides of the issue who do worry more about freaky outfits or what goes on in people's bedrooms, more than they do about their children's future, national security, etc., and you have a media that has been dulled by the popularity of reality shows and Phil Donahue wannabe talk shows that feed this to everybody else in the country in the form of the nightly news, CNN, etc.

It's funny when you hear about people who get excited about some outfit they are going to wear on the weekend. You sure as hell would never hear me say "Bill, this weekend, I'm going to put on some Dickies' overalls, some gorgeous Wolverine work boots, this totally bitchin' Sears Craftsman toolbelt, item #I488X, along with these fabulous Craftsman Heavy-Duty Suspenders, item #40677, and I'm going to top this ensemble off with a Craftsman 30ft. tape holder, item #40545"

Sounds to me like "coming out" has become a fashionable way of expressing dissatisfaction with the GOP. I'm not happy with Bush/Christians/conservatives/people who wear black ties; therefore I will retaliate by announcing I am gay. (Better yet, "marry" my partner.)

This to me is ironic, because it is only going to make people associate the Democrats even more with the gays.

Oh, I doubt it........he's been with his "partner" for 40 years, after all. I just think, given his political background, that his granting of an interview to the NY Times regarding his "wedding", is itself a political statement.

Finkelstein has been around for a long time,and I believe he gave this interview to the NY Slimes because word was sure to have gotten out and he headed them off at the pass. If he did this(married) for legal reasons such as estate,will,health care issues etc especially after 40 years I do not have a problem. Nobody but people in Massachusetts will recognize that it is real marriage,just for legal matters. How many hetero's have been together 40 years?
