Fall in EU population forecast by 2050

The population of the European Union will fall dramatically by 2050, even allowing for the arrival of millions of immigrants, an official survey reported yesterday.

Deaths would begin to outnumber births across the EU in the next five years, it predicted.

A collapse in childbirth rates and increased emigration has already caused populations to start shrinking in several of the former communist countries of eastern and central Europe that joined the EU last year.

The survey by the EU's statistics agency, Eurostat, showed that by 2013 the population of Italy would start to fall, joined a year later by Germany and Slovenia and, in 2018, by Portugal.

The population of Britain will continue to grow, peaking in 2040, followed by 10 years of gentle decline. Eurostat estimates that, by 2050, the population will be 64.3 million, compared with 59.6 million today.

Overall, the total population of the EU is expected to rise by more than 13 million between now and 2025, although after 2010 that increase will be entirely the result of immigration.

By 2025, even net migration will not be able to counteract the falling fertility of the continent and by 2050 the population of the EU will be 450 million, a decrease of more than 20 million people from the peak.

There are rare exceptions: the populations of Ireland, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta and Sweden will continue to grow even after 2050, the survey says.

The research was commissioned to try to estimate the scale of the pensions crisis that Europe will face as its population ages dramatically.

Most governments fund retirement benefits from the taxes paid by those in employment and that system will come under intolerable strain as Europe becomes greyer.

Some countries, such as Spain and Italy, face having one in three citizens over retirement age.

The European Commission said it would be sending the data to national governments in the hope of urging them to carry out vital reforms.

Some countries have ducked serious reforms. Far from reforming, France, for example, has increased its pensions burdens, bowing to pressure to lower the retirement age for certain professions and trades, such as lorry drivers, after protests and industrial action.

A few things to note. The immigration is not enough to replenish the shrinking EU. Woe to the EU pensioners.

The fact that Sweden is one of the rare exceptions (along with Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, and Cyprus) is, contrary to what many may think, due to our muslim immigrants. Fertile as they may be they are still a small minority. No, the fact that the Swedish birth numbers haven't fallen so drastically have other more complex reasons.

It probably has to do with the timing of the integration of women in the labour market (earlier than in most European countries), the availability of child care etc, etc.

Once France is successful at dragging all of Europe into the European Union, these numbers will rise dramitically.

Some people remember the 1930's

Advice to Europeans: Have babies. Sacrifice the hedonistic, childless, pleasure-chasing existence that characterizes young European couples in favor of one that will pay dividends for generations. Marry within your own culture -- if you think it's worth preserving, that is.

With our present crop of "pols" - yes.

But I'm the eternal optimist and believe that things will change.

Yes... What are the population predictions for the States? As I understand, it is to only go up here for all of the forseeable future, right? And what factors contribute to our rise in population? And is a rise in population over a period of time necessarily desirable? As I understand, Europe contains over a BILLION people. If it was one country, in density it would exceed most. Perhaps it is not a bad thing.

Things will get interesting in Europe much sooner than 2050. For starters, I think that there's good chance that the majority of children in Europe will be Muslim by 2030. That may not be too bad in and of itself, but unfortunately for the pensioners, these children will grow up.

At some point early in their working careers these Muslims are going to realize that they are the majority of young adults, and then start wondering why they have to pay 50% or more in taxes support hundreds of millions of old, white, people.

Then the fun begins...

The fact that Sweden is one of the rare exceptions (along with Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, and Cyprus) is, contrary to what many may think, NOT due to our muslim immigrants.

From what I have heard, their decent birthrates are due to significan incentives to families with children including direct payouts, and childcare/healthcare subsidies.

Your last question really captures the problem: These people have been indoctrinated since pre-school that their nations and culture are not worth preserving. Even worse, they've been taught that their culture is responsible for all of the evil in the world. That's why they must embrace the "other" - the "noble savages" and allow them en masse into their own homelands.

In Malmo, Sweden - a city overrun with Muslim criminal gangs, the local ERs refused to install metal detectors at the entraces because it might be perceived as an 'agressive act' by the local jihadis. It's end-stage liberalism - total suicidal nihilism. The Euros have rejected God, and chosen death over life. Do not gloat - instead look on in horror and dread, America. You are not that far behind on the road into the abyss. The same nihilistic worldview that is now destroying the ancient nations of Europe is busily metastizing its way through this nation as well.

No, the fact that the Swedish birth numbers haven't fallen so drastically have other more complex reasons.

Reasons for this:

1. Sweedish women are more beautiful
2. Sweedish women bath regularly
3. Sweedish women shave their armpits.

Another dangerous and possibly worse thing than the muslims that is going to bring down the nations of Europe is the homosexual movement.

"Another dangerous and possibly worse thing than the muslims that is going to bring down the nations of Europe is the homosexual movement."

...actually, that's fueling the Muslims. It gives them unity by allowing their leaders to say to Muslims that might want to join the fun of white Europe "...see what the alternative is".

The degree of self-destructiveness by the Europeans is on a scale unparalleled in history (maybe with the exception of the last days of the Roman Empire). I can't help thinking that the Europeans will some day snap out of it and make the genocides of the 20th century look like child's play.

America is a actual united, functual, governed country, called, oddly, The United States. Europe isn't. Europe is a Continent.

There is a organization in Europe, referred as the European Union, a very suspect and doubtable democratic entity, who's main existence depends on the suspension of disbelief and the acceptance of administrative diktat.
