OTTAWA (CP) - Prime Minister Paul Martin says he has the moral authority to govern despite new allegations that the Liberal party took kickbacks in the sponsorship scandal.
Martin, speaking Monday for the first time since damaging testimony was released by the sponsorship inquiry last week, also reiterated that he had nothing to do with the scandal.
Despite a public opinion poll suggesting his Liberal party is in freefall in the wake of the latest testimony, Martin maintained he has the "moral authority" to govern.
A poll released Monday indicated that just 25 per cent of respondents interviewed late last week said they would vote for the Liberals if an election were held that day.
The Conservatives under Stephen Harper were backed by 36 per cent, up 10 points from a survey taken in February.
The national results gave the NDP 20.5 per cent of the vote, the Bloc Quebecois 12.6 per cent and the Green party five per cent.
The survey immediately followed the release of devastating testimony last Thursday by former Montreal ad executive Jean Brault at the inquiry looking into the federal government's sponsorship scandal. Brault alleged gross misconduct in the Quebec wing of the federal Liberal party.
The results suggest a dramatic drop in Liberal fortunes everywhere, but particularly in their onetime Ontario stronghold.
In Ontario, the Conservatives were backed by 40 per cent of respondents, with the Liberals at 33 - a drop of about 10 points since last year's election.

MARTIN SEZ POPE "WOULD HAVE WANTED" HIM TO STAY
Sounds rather authoritarian, if you ask me.
At this point they'll say anything to stay in #1 spot...
Who cares if he thinks he has moral authority to govern or not. As long as after he is clobbered in new elections in about a month he doesn't entertain any notions of having moral authority to govern...
Uh,....is that absolute moral authority?
.......or,.....relative moral authority?
Ah,.............................................it must be al-Sharia al-Qaeda (OBL) authority...?
....
Hmmm...
The principle of Majority Rule notwithstanding, Mr. Martin claims to have the "moral authority" to govern.
I would have thought the British had settled the issue of "Ruling by Divine Right" with the execution of Charles I in 1649.
But perhaps Mr. Martin prefers the "French" answer to that question: le guillotine?
Come on, Gilles Duceppe!!!
Call that motion of no-confidence now!!!
