No there are different types. Some are much more conservative than others. Excuse the ignorance but don't they profess the same faith?

No, they don't profess the same faith. ELCA is only "Lutheran" because their parents were. They don't confess the same things anymore.

Excuse the ignorance but don't they profess the same faith? Not really. The ELCA claims to follow the book of Concord, but in practice left that along time ago. For instance, when the ELCA signed intercommunion agreements with both the ECUSA and the UCC, which are Anglican and Reformed respectively, it is hard to say what the leadership of the ELCA really believes anymore.
They are trying to outdo the ECUSA at their own game.
