Steyn might also want to e-mail the CAT-scans of the protectionists on Free Republic who are trying to fight globalization with pitchforks. Battling free trade in 2005 is like trying to stop the internet.

Or commanding the tides to stop.

Meanwhile, all that that pompous Norwegian who heads up the UN humanitarian bureaucracy could do was give press conferences in New York hectoring the developed world for its ‘stinginess’, so every Western government promptly dipped into its taxpayers’ pockets and threw more money at the pompous Norwegian than he can ever usefully spend, and the only result will be that, when the next tsunami hits, it’ll take ’em even longer to get to the scene, but the pompous Norwegian will be able to give even more hectoring press conferences, perhaps with lavish visual aids.

Yes. That jumped out at me too. LOL.

Or commanding the tides to stop.

Just saw a program on discovery about that last night. Apparently the Dutch have figured out how to do this to a large extent.

Bump for later reading; thanks for the ping, Pokey! (Two in two days; I'm feeling blessed!)

I love all his references to the pompous Norwegian.

Let's be sure to give credit where it's due. The pompous Norwegian is:

Jan Egeland of Norway, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator

Mark Steyn: Penetrating insights delivered with satiric genius.

There should be an award for this guy somewhere. At the very least an honorary degree since he never went to college.

Hmm. A Columbia ping for honorary degree??

Fuhgeddaboutit. Mark Steyn is much too pro-Israel for Columbia to consider giving him anything.

The question I find myself mulling over now is this: what’s to stop everything turning into the British car industry?

Yes, but what's the answer?

I was vaguely following things up to a decade or three back

And if accountancy isn’t a safe, steady job any more, you might as well run off and join the circus.

It means, as the old song used to go, when it’s moonlight on the Hudson, it’s CAT-scan-reading time on the Ganges.

Vintage Steyn and part of why I love him.

Not all Dutchmen or Belgians will wish to follow their compatriots down the Eurinal of history.

I have quoted this man so often, I should be paying him royalties. Thanks, Pokey!

I've already bought the books....

China has been Canada’s single biggest source of immigrants — accounting for 16 per cent of new permanent residents —

Largest Chinese populated city on the North American west coast is NOT San Francisco, but VANCOUVER, British Columbia.

Some REAL GOOD chinese food, there.

A movement for Steyn to get an honorary degree would have to be generated by alumnai rather than students.

The administration has never cared what the students thought since I can remember.

By the way, as a quondam grad student adjunct teacher, I'm in support of higher pay and benefits to adjuncts. We carry the teaching load in large classes while the tenured profs teach one class a week--often to only a few students in a seminar.
