Make sure you do a guided tour of the Battlefield with one of the Park Service Guides. they take you in your car and do a great job of explaining the field. We had a real treat going to Artillery Ridge Stables. They have a battlefield ride with audio tape narration. We got to do it on July 3, the anniversary of the Third Day. The Ghost tour is fun in the evening.
If the park service has started already, skip the "slavery was the reason for the War of Northern Aggression". The PC crowd has been jumping up and down to get slavery induced into any battle field tour. Just get a map and audio tape and do the tour yourself, you'll be fine.
Bump on that. I was in Gettysburg for a day and got the tour in my rental car from a older park guide. The guy knew tons of stories about the battle. I think it's the best way to see the park and learn the history.
Artillery Ridge Stables will let you RIDE the battlefield, as on HORSES?
We did that at Chickamauga and it was a blast! Of course, I love to ride. I cantered my nag through the breakthrough at Brotherton's. Didn't feel anything creepy either while riding around or later while walking . . . maybe the spirits of my two gg grandfathers who attended the premiere were protecting me, but it's a quiet, happy place.
Is it a guided tour?
