The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Full Story

We now know more about an alleged attack that triggered an increased national threat level last summer.

That's when U.S. officials said they had uncovered a plot targeting financial institutions. The plot involved bombs, banks and British nationals.

The detail was startling, the targets enormous. They included financial buildings in Washington, New York and New Jersey.

And, Sen. Larry Craig joins us to explain why he wants to give legal status to a half-million illegal farm workers in the United States.

Speak up Sen Larry Craig, all of us US citizens who want our borders controlled want to hear what you have to say as well, and it better be pretty convincing and not pandering. Also Sen. Larry Craig, let us know when you plan to open the borders completely after you get those half-million in.

"Nationwide Roundup Nabs More Than 10,000 Fugitives"

MARK SHERMAN
Associated Press

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than 10,000 fugitives, many wanted for violent crimes, were rounded up over the past week in a coordinated nationwide effort led by U.S. marshals.

Officers from 960 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies took part in the concentrated search, which coincided with Crime Victims Rights Week, officials said. The dragnet caught 10,340 people, some of whom had two or more outstanding arrest warrants, Justice Department officials said.

More than 150 who were arrested were wanted for murder, another 550 were sought on rape or sexual assault charges, and more than 600 had outstanding arrest warrants for armed robbery, officials said. Among those captured were 150 gang members and 100 unregistered sex offenders, they said."

"Police arrest seven Islamists
and raid 30 associated sites"

14 April 2005

MUNICH -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A spokeswoman for Munich police said 12 premises, including two mosques, were searched in Munich alone, with the rest of the sites checked being located in other Bavarian towns and the states of Berlin, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bremen, Lower Saxony and Hamburg.

The sites checked in Brussels were publishers' offices.

"We looked at the homes and offices of anyone who had any sort of contact to these two suspects," she said. Police took away tax records, other business documents, desktop computers, cash and a small quantity of banned drugs.

The two men are likely to face charges under German laws that require tax audits of charities and notification to statistical authorities of major foreign exchange transactions. Police did not say what the other five men were accused of.

The state of Bavaria also spearheaded this year's two earlier nationwide sweeps of Islamist fund-raisers.

"We'll step up the pressure on Islamist extremists even more and use every possible provision of immigration law to deport as fast as possible those who threaten us or preach hatred," said the Bavarian interior minister, Guenther Beckstein.

Police said the two main suspects had valid immigration permits."

Amtrak Cancels Acela Express Service Because of Brake Problems (Northeast Corridor - Boston to D.C. - 4/15/05)

The Associated Press Published: Apr 15, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) - Amtrak said it had canceled service Friday on its Acela Express because of problems with brakes on the high-speed trains that carry passengers between Washington, New York and Boston.

Cracks were found in brake components on most coaches of the trains during routine inspections, Amtrak said in a statement, adding that no brake failures or other safety problems had occurred.

Most other Amtrak service was scheduled to operate normally. Amtrak said its Metroliner service will operate Friday, with the exception of train No. 102, the 10:00 a.m. departure from Washington to New York, which was also canceled....

I just heard this Amtrak story on the local news. Suspicious about broken tracks...are these all of a sudden? Wouldn't we expect routine inspection and maintenance of tracks rather than a full scale shut down of service?
