The great danger for the Left is that its Vietnam and Bush obsessions may mean that it will end up on the wrong side of history.

Too late, dude--you've been on the wrong side of history for a good century.

The mental exertions of a modestly informed leftist struggling manfully, but completely failing, to get it.

The left doesn't hate President Bush with all their passion because of some puny policy differences. They hate, passionately, out President because he is exactly were they want to be, and that is in power. They know he is a great president . They know he is not a "liar". They know his intelligence is well above most of theirs. They know he has more integrity than anyone on their side. They know that Iraq needed to be rescued and they know we need more friends in the middle east. In other words, their passionate hate for George W. Bush is as phony as they are. And it's getting more and more evident to the normal people in the world exactly what their problem is. They are evil and nuts.

Democracy is the most radical and revolutionary political idea in the world.

Yes, actually, it is, and the United States the foremost revolutionary power in the world. But the vast majority on the left very definitely does not believe that.

What most of it does believe in, and with a religious fervor, is a roadmap of historical progress that was laid out by Marx and Hegel, in which collectivism is the aim, forced economic egalitarianism is "social justice," and national states are subordinated to world government. Anything outside this narrow pathway is "deviationist."

What Bush has done is deviationist in its most dangerous form, successful deviationism. Intelligent members of the left who have seen through the terrible consequences of the pipedream described above are reconciling themselves to a world order that satisfies certain perfectly laudable ideals - democracy, human rights, freedom for the oppressed - without the lockstep commitment to a false historical path. Marxism is a snake with its head pinned to the ground, but the tail will be thrashing for decades to come.
