I Love Chinese Beer

If there is one thing that I love doing in China, it's sampling the various local brews. In fact, I consider myself to be quite the connoisseur of Chinese beer.

Unlike Budweiser or many other American domestic beers, you can drink Chinese beer warm. To most, that probably brings a wrinkled lip to your face as well as a couple of half-cocked eyebrows, but it's true and that's how they prefer to drink it here in the Middle Kingdom. It took some getting used to, but so does everything here in China when you're a foreigner. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer my beer cold, but I've come to believe that if you can drink a beer warm and it still tastes good...that's a hell of a beer!

Sunday, my daughter who loves cheese, begged to go to the Chinese restaurant for lunch, I wondered if there are any Chinese cheeses.

As I understand it, lactose intolerance is far more prevalent in Chinese populations than any others. I don't know if it's true, but it's just something I read somewhere.

If it IS true, they're probably not great cheesemakers.

Why do the British drink warm beer?

Because they all have Lucas refrigerators.

When I was in Taiwan, I have fond memories of Tsing Tao, or something spelled like that. Looking back, I hope I was drinking Taiwanese beer and not beer from the mainland...

Tsingtao is from the mainland.

There is a brand called "Taiwan Beer" that isn't exported, and that's from Taiwan.

LOL dude. Actually I don't like Tsingtao beer as much as I like "Taiwan Beer". It has very low after taste and people there drink it like water in the summer.

I actually prefer Japanese Beer, specifically Sapporo.
It is second only to Guinness in my book.

According to my Chinese wife, no. There are no Chinese cheeses (at least that she knows of). There may be some kinds of cheese in western china and Tibet, or up where the Uighers are, but nothing in the east. Eastern China has a dearth of herd animals capable of producing. The only animal that I am aware of that is raised in any quantity is pigs, and I have never heard of pig's milk cheese. I know there are some cows, as beef is available, but it is far from common. When I visited, a neighbor's kid asked if I ate a lot of beef because I have more body hair than the average asian, plus I am larger and have pinker skin color. Apparently, eating a lot of beef is considered primitive (or wasteful; not sure which, maybe both).
