Dallas County prosecutors are investigating whether criminal charges should be brought in connection with last year's disclosure of inflated circulation at The Dallas Morning News.

Belo Corp., owner of The News, said Thursday that it received a subpoena this week from the Dallas County district attorney's office. The subpoena seeks "documents related to the previously announced circulation overstatement" at the newspaper, Belo said in a statement announcing its first-quarter earnings.

A spokeswoman for District Attorney Bill Hill confirmed that a grand jury investigation is under way.

LOL!
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch - the holier-than-thou types that are always harping on "corporate malfeasance" and "corporate ethics" appear to have no ethical standards of their own.

Worst part is that Belo bought the Denton Record-Chronicle ("Wretched Chronicle") a cou-ple years ago, got rid of the conservative editor and installed their puppet.

OTOH, they manage to balance the Wicked Witch of the West's (Molly Ivins) columns with Ann Coulter!
Drives the local Dims right up the wall!

I am convinced that these days most newspapers are wildly inflating their circulation figures.

Just try to cancel your newspaper--many of them will keep delivering for free for months.

It would also be interesting to see how many they throw away and claim were sold to con advertisers.
