Hijacking Christianity... (WaPo Columnist Likens Justice Sunday to Klan Meeting)
The Washington Post ^ | Saturday, April 23, 2005 | Colbert King

Posted on 04/23/2005 8:35:22 AM PDT by kristinn

The American flag was appropriated by the political right wing years ago. Now the Christian right is trying to hijack religion. This time it shouldn't be allowed to happen without a fight.

In 1969...SNIP...The flag had been taken over by self-styled patriots, noncombatant domestic supporters of the war and vocal opponents of the civil rights movement. Nixonites and George Wallace supporters were sporting flags in their lapels and stickers on their cars.

SNIP

It didn't help that some Vietnam War protesters stupidly burned the American flag.

SNIP

Emboldened by their appropriation of the flag, ideologues on the right have now set their sights on religion, and specifically Christianity, as the means to promote their political agenda. And as the promoters of tomorrow's "Justice Sunday" national telecast have demonstrated, there is no depth to which they won't sink in their campaign to seize the country.

SNIP

Which judges are out to rob Christians of their heritage? That is religious McCarthyism. Perkins should name them, provide evidence of their attempted theft of "our Christian heritage" or retract that statement with an apology. Don't count on that happening.

SNIP

It means challenging them when they say of Americans who support a woman's right to choose; the right of two adults to enter into a loving, committed, state-sanctioned, monogamous relationship; the right to pursue science in support of life; the right of the aggrieved to launch aggressive assaults against racism, sexism and homophobia, that they are not legitimate members of the flock.

SNIP

They are not now and never will be the final arbiters of Christian beliefs and values. They warrant as much deference as religious leaders as do members of the Ku Klux Klan, who also marched under the cross.

SNIP

It's a shame this column had to be chopped up for excerpting. It is a gem of a liberal meltdown.

uh, maybe that Judge who told another Judge to demolish his ten commandments display ???

Or the Judge who decided "under God" has to be taken out of the pledge?

Or the Judge who forbade a valedictorian to quote scripture at her graduation ceremony?

... those judges, maybe ???

Proving the point that the religious are considered somehow less than acceptable members of American society.

Evidently they would prefer us to be seen and not heard.

Evidently they would prefer us to be (not)seen and not heard.

And one day, soon, God is going to give them what they want.

Ann Coulter is correct once again. When liberals stop being able to call you stupid, they call you crazy or a racist.

Here the obvious ploy is to lump anti-communists, aka the Nixonites, in with racists, the George Wallace crowd. Also note the specific selection of the year 1969. I guess prior to 1969 that the author would have been dealing with Democrats running a half assed war and racist Democrats. Now that wouldn't work, would it.

Oh gee. Let's see..... How about:

And in the latest example of Judicial Activism, a Cook County IL 'judge' ruled yesterday that IL Pharmacists MUST fill prescriptions birth control pills and especially for the morning after pill, EVEN if it violates their religion - or they'll face fines and imprisonment.

There is no way to Hijack something that is free to all.We Christians just accept it. When we accept it we then know right from wrong. That is why we are called the right...Right?

We then stand for what we feel the Bible teaches..Right?

The issue is that the Democrats want to impose a religious litmus test on the judiciary. They are trying to spin this as Republicans injecting religion into politics -- actually it is the Democrats who have done so by advocating religious discrimination.

oh wow. this is quite the collum. when the sheep and goats are seperated by The One and Only Judge... well, we'll see who are and are not "legitimate members of the flock" won't we.

this communist anti-God, anti-American attack on the Minutemen and now this.... i wish our elected leaders would be more vocal against this sort of lying rhetoric. it's like they are setting things in place for when they get Christian/Patriot haters into the seats of power.... planting the seeds of evil in the minds of the gullable.

Prayers for our Nation.

You forgot about the judges who ruled against prayer in school. the 10 commandments in the judge's office, prayer at commencement, prayer at football games. etc. etc.

All these rulings are against the "free exercise" clause in the first amendment and should be overturned and not enforced.

"... they would prefer us to be seen and not heard."

Except when they're in trouble and a family member has been seriously injured or is seriously ill - who do they call - the people of FAITH - because they want us to PRAY.

I've always found this to be most amazing.
