University of Hawaii students and faculty were treated to a sad spectacle on Wednesday night at the Art Auditorium.
A bitter, defeated man named David Horowitz attempted to spew his lies and hate speech to an audience of about 100 people.
He was soundly defeated by a courageous group of truth-and-reality advocates. Every time Horowitz told a lie, he was corrected by an audience member, who then were rudely told to “Shut up!” by some demented looking right-wingers.
Horowitz is pushing the agenda of a group calling itself "Students for Academic Freedom," a thinly veiled attempt to censor university professors who criticize US foreign policy. Horowitz claims without a shred of evidence that universities are controlled by radical marxists who brainwash their students. This is just projection; in fact it is the rightwingers who want to destroy free thought at the universities and turn them into fascist indoctrination camps.
The fascist and corporate criminal wing of the Republican Party now controls all three branches of government, the corporate media, the US military global empire and now they want to take over the last bastion of truth and decency, colleges and universities.
Why are rightwingers so paranoid about destroying universities like they have destroyed everything else that is good about America? Universities are the last place where people can escape from the brainwashing of the state-run Goebbelesque right wing media machine; the last place where you can be free to think and offer dissenting opinions without being maced in the face by psychotic police.
The Bush administration, the most criminal administration since that of former President Ronald Reagan, has established a fascist global empire that would make Hitler jealous. What little dissent that has escaped the post-9/11 hypnosis (terrorist! Terrorist! Be afraid!) is squelched by the jack booted thugs of the Busheviks.
How did Horowitz come to this sad state? He was a radical leftist in the 60s and worked with the Black Panthers. When some of his friends were murdered by the FBI’s Cointelpro program, Horowitz embraced the system which was oppressing him rather than fighting against it. It must be some variation of the Stockholm Syndrome or perhaps he was just slumming, a poser, a faux radical. As soon as the going got tough, he abandoned his ideals and became a fascist traitor. Who knows, maybe he was working for Cointelpro all those years he was posing as a radical.
No matter how you slice it, he is a coward. It is funny how the cowards have taken over the government. Since when do we let cowards tell us to be afraid of empty shadows. Real men lead through courage, not fear.
The current movement of fear-mongers does not even deserve the name conservative. True conservatives would seek to preserve the constitution, not destroy it. True conservatism actually shares many values with true liberalism, which espouses the primacy of individual rights over state power. These liars and hypocrites were called “pseudo-conservatives” by Richard Hofstadter. He described pseudo-conservatism in his book, “The Paranoid Style in American Politics and Other Essays:”
"Pseudoconservativism is among other things a disorder in relation to authority, characterized by an inability to find other modes for human relationship than those of more or less complete domination or submission ... The pseudo-conservative is a man who, in the name of upholding traditional American values and institutions and defending them against more or less fictitious dangers, consciously or unconsciously aims at their abolition ... [He] sees his own country as being so weak that it is constantly about to fall victim to subversion; and yet he feels that it is so all-powerful that any failure it may experience in getting its way in the world ... cannot possibly be due to its limitations but must be attributed to its having been betrayed."
I sometimes wonder if pseudo-conservatives were locked in a closet for the first 20 years of their life. That would explain their palpable rage and their dim myopic grasping to understand a complex world that is beyond their ken. Rather than attempting to understand its chaotic dynamics and adapt to them, they seek to destroy the world around them and reduce it to a simple one-dimensional black-and-white parody that they can understand. Their rage and self-hatred is projected outward to the other, Jews for the Nazis now Muslims for the current batch of beady-eyed little fascists.
Some wonder if pseudo-conservatism is a disease. The web site http://www.armchairsubversive.com shows the robust correlation between Republicanism and pedophilia. Even serial killer Ted Bundy campaigned for the Republican party.
I think pseudo-conservatism is a neurological defect, a breakdown in sensory integration much like autism. Like all disabled people, pseudo-conservatives deserve our understanding and sympathy, but they should not be running the country. This epidemic of neuropathy seems to be contagious, but like most plagues it will hopefully burn it self out soon.
The Guardian reported (8/13/03) that “[a] study funded by the US government has concluded that conservatism can be explained psychologically as a set of neuroses rooted in "fear and aggression, dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity".
UCLA Professor Philip Agre believes that conservatism is the domination of society by an aristocracy, and that “[c]onservatism is incompatible with democracy, prosperity, and civilization in general. It is a destructive system of inequality and prejudice that is founded on deception and has no place in the modern world.” So why do we put up with this medieval system of oppression?
Horowitz really displayed his true nature when he first walked into the auditorium. One of his group of supporters walked up to him and attempted to give him a lei. Horowitz snubbed this woman and humiliated her in front of the whole audience. His total lack of aloha and sensitivity was a disgrace. He and other rightwingers are always trying to polarize the discussion between the Left and the Right. Anyone can see that the real polarity in the world today is between the Right and the Human Race. Anytime they want to renounce their hatred of humanity and rejoin the human race, we will always welcome them. But we have zero tolerance for their lies and hypocrisy.

I think his real name might be Joseph Goebbles Junior, since his idiotic diatribe in the latest issue of Hawaii Reporter was the biggest, most fantastic collection of lies and vitriol that I have seen since the demise of the Third Reich.

The more upset and helpless the liberals feel, the more they resort to childish name-calling. What happened to honest debate in class? I guess they haven't been exposed to it. Whenever I do it, conservative ideas triumph every time. I think it is the liberals who smother speech in the mode of fascists. I just don't get how they don't see this.

A person in chemical hygiene is involved in making sure that chemicals are handled and stored properly and that lab personnel are following proper safety procedures.
That said, Mark Burch sounds like a bitter and defeated man.

I thought the omission of even a single logical argument about even one point made by David Horowitz kind of stood out, too. Nothing but paragraph after paragraph of fantasizing and psychologizing to give words to his childish emotions. And this is taken as academic discussion!
Mark Burch, if you're reading this, I challenge you to log in and report one point Horowitz made, any point, and rebut it.
I think this and Horowitz's letter should be stapled together and passed to every parent concerned about their child's future learning experience. This isn't learning, this is brainwashing, simular to what Hitler did, Stalin did, and Islam does.

College Faculties A Most Liberal Lot, Study Finds

College faculties, long assumed to be a liberal bastion, lean further to the left than even the most conspiratorial conservatives might have imagined, a new study says.
By their own description, 72 percent of those teaching at American universities and colleges are liberal and 15 percent are conservative, says the study being published this week. The imbalance is almost as striking in partisan terms, with 50 percent of the faculty members surveyed identifying themselves as Democrats and 11 percent as Republicans.
The disparity is even more pronounced at the most elite schools, where, according to the study, 87 percent of faculty are liberal and 13 percent are conservative.
"What's most striking is how few conservatives there are in any field," said Robert Lichter, a professor at George Mason University and a co-author of the study. "There was no field we studied in which there were more conservatives than liberals or more Republicans than Democrats. It's a very homogenous environment, not just in the places you'd expect to be dominated by liberals."
Religious services take a back seat for many faculty members, with 51 percent saying they rarely or never attend church or synagogue and 31 percent calling themselves regular churchgoers. On the gender front, 72 percent of the full-time faculty are male and 28 percent female.
The findings, by Lichter and fellow political science professors Stanley Rothman of Smith College and Neil Nevitte of the University of Toronto, are based on a survey of 1,643 full-time faculty at 183 four-year schools. The researchers relied on 1999 data from the North American Academic Study Survey, the most recent comprehensive data available.
The study appears in the March issue of the Forum, an online political science journal. It was funded by the Randolph Foundation, a right-leaning group that has given grants to such conservative organizations as the Independent Women's Forum and Americans for Tax Reform.
Rothman sees the findings as evidence of "possible discrimination" against conservatives in hiring and promotion. Even after factoring in levels of achievement, as measured by published work and organization memberships, "the most likely conclusion" is that "being conservative counts against you," he said. "It doesn't surprise me, because I've observed it happening." The study, however, describes this finding as "preliminary."
When asked about the findings, Jonathan Knight, director of academic freedom and tenure for the American Association of University Professors, said, "The question is how this translates into what happens within the academic community on such issues as curriculum, admission of students, evaluation of students, evaluation of faculty for salary and promotion." Knight said he isn't aware of "any good evidence" that personal views are having an impact on campus policies.
"It's hard to see that these liberal views cut very deeply into the education of students. In fact, a number of studies show the core values that students bring into the university are not very much altered by being in college."
Rothman, Lichter and Nevitte find a leftward shift on campus over the past two decades. In the last major survey of college faculty, by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 1984, 39 percent identified themselves as liberal.
In contrast with the finding that nearly three-quarters of college faculty are liberal, a Harris Poll of the general public last year found that 33 percent describe themselves as conservative and 18 percent as liberal.
The liberal label that a majority of the faculty members attached to themselves is reflected on a variety of issues. The professors and instructors surveyed are, strongly or somewhat, in favor of abortion rights (84 percent); believe homosexuality is acceptable (67 percent); and want more environmental protection "even if it raises prices or costs jobs" (88 percent). What's more, the study found, 65 percent want the government to ensure full employment, a stance to the left of the Democratic Party.
Recent campus controversies have reinforced the left-wing faculty image. The University of Colorado is reviewing its tenure system after one professor, Ward Churchill, created an uproar by likening World Trade Center victims to Nazis. Harvard's faculty of arts and sciences voted no confidence in the university's president, Lawrence Summers, after he privately wondered whether women had the same natural ability as men in science and math.
The study did not attempt to examine whether the political views of faculty members affect the content of their courses.
The researchers say that liberals, men and non-regular churchgoers are more likely to be teaching at top schools, while conservatives, women and more religious faculty are more likely to be relegated to lower-tier colleges and universities.
Top-tier schools, roughly a third of the total, are defined as highly ranked liberal arts colleges and research universities that grant PhDs.
The most liberal faculties are those devoted to the humanities (81 percent) and social sciences (75 percent), according to the study. But liberals outnumbered conservatives even among engineering faculty (51 percent to 19 percent) and business faculty (49 percent to 39 percent).
The most left-leaning departments are English literature, philosophy, political science and religious studies, where at least 80 percent of the faculty say they are liberal and no more than 5 percent call themselves conservative, the study says.
"In general," says Lichter, who also heads the nonprofit Center for Media and Public Affairs, "even broad-minded people gravitate toward other people like themselves. That's why you need diversity, not just of race and gender but also, maybe especially, of ideas and perspective."
