Americans Oppose Senate Rule Changes, [Flawed Poll] Shows
Washington Post ^ | 4/25/05 | Richard Morin and Dan Balz

As the Senate moves toward a major confrontation over judicial appointments, a strong majority of Americans oppose changing the rules to make it easier for Republican leaders to win confirmation of President Bush's court nominees, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News Poll.

GOP leaders are threatening a rules change to prohibit the use of filibusters to block judicial nominees and have stepped up their criticism of the Democrats for using the tactic on some of Bush's nominees to the federal appellate courts. They say they are prepared to invoke what has become known as the "nuclear option" to assure that Bush's nominees receive an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor.

But by a 2-1 margin, the public rejected easing Senate rules in a way that would make it harder for Democratic senators to prevent final action on Bush's nominees. Even many Republicans were reluctant to abandon current Senate confirmation procedures: Nearly half opposed any rules changes, joining eight in 10 Democrats and seven in 10 political independents, the poll found.

What a bunch of malarkey. The poll includes a whole bunch of other questions and basically says that John Kerry will win the election for President of the United States. Of course, they don't even mention the word "filibuster". Here's the question:
"Would you support or oppose changing the Senate rules to make it easier for the Republicans to confirm Bush's judicial nominees?"

The post is just trying to do everything in their power to dissuade Republicans in the Senate. I'm sure the American public would be even more offended about democrats "shutting down" the government.

These people are sooo transparent.

Let's see, if you phrase the question: Do you support the Nuclear option of the eevil wascally wepublicans destroying the traditions of 200 years of Senate rules and circumvent the will of the American people?

Yes? No?

Hhhmmmm. Tough question. Let me think...

Typical ABC News type issue polling questions. Also not that they say the Democrats have "blocked 10" nominees. They don't mention the fillibuster in that one either.

Makes you wonder why ABC news spends the money. They could just higher Gallup and they might get professionaly worded questions. Of course maybe that's the point.

This proves that the wording of a poll makes a great difference, and/or that Americans once again hold contradictory views on an issue.

There was another poll a month or so ago that showed over 60% of Americans favor giving judicial nominees an up or down vote from the full Senate.

So somethings gotta give.

Yep, it's a classic "push-poll" by liberal MSM.

Well .. the WP had to do something. 61 million people watched Justice Sunday - and I sincerely doubt any of them are against changing the rule.

Since the Washington Post has a really, really hard time dealing with truth, I suggest a massive transfusion of truth serum be administered to all its management, editors, and "reporters", and that CSPAN cover the event live.

Yep, but we don't doubt that they vote.

And Republican Senators are dumb enough to fall for it.

The question, which mirrors the way the press has been reporting this, is a lie.

In addition to using 'push poll' questions, the WashPost/ABCNews pollsters GROSSLY OVERSAMPLED Democrats/Democrat-leaning Independents:

Self-description:
35% Democrat (+7)
28% Republican

Self-identification (i.e., values more aligned with Democrats or Republicans):
47% Democrat (+9)
38% Republican

Additionally, only 30% of those polled identified themselves as Conservatives while 67% identified themselves as Liberals or Moderates!

BOTTOMLINE: ALL of these media-generated polls are agenda-driven drivel . . . worse than the 11/2 exit polls!!!

Washington Post has degenerated...

The Washington Post is degenerate, as is ABC, and their poll is a thinly veiled attempt to influence Republicans based on lies. The WaPo-ABC poll is a deception, and these "news" organizations are void of the truth. Rassmusen Reports:

1. People favor giving every nominee a vote 45% to 21%
2. People support banning the filibuster on nominees 56% to 26%

He couches it with a downward trend from one month ago, but support for the Constitutional option is very strong still.
