(1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) A new poll released shows Mayor Michael Bloomberg making significant gains over his Democratic opponents in the mayoral election.
Bloomberg leads his closest Democratic opponent, former Bronx borough president Fernando Ferrer 51 percent to 38 percent with 11 percent undecided.
In the same poll last month Ferrer led Bloomberg 49 percent to 42 percent.
Bloomberg also improved his prospects for re-election with 47 percent saying he should stay in City Hall, although a slim majority of 48 percent felt it was time for a new mayor.
However, Bloomberg's overall approval rating was at 48 percent, an increase from the 43 percent he received in March.
About 40 percent of registered voters surveyed felt Bloomberg was doing a good job, up five percentage points from a March poll and seven percentage points from one year ago.
By 32 percent, the voters said the top priority for the winner of the mayor's race should be education, 21 percent emphasized employment and 19 percent prioritized economic development.
Finally, 52 percent of voters said they were less likely to vote for Bloomberg based on his support of the West Side Stadium project.
The Marist College survey was conducted from April 25th through April 26th among 525 registered city voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points
"While I know that Bloomy is a Republican-by-convenience still a GOP win here will be a nice way to begin the 2006 election season."
I agree i would also like to see us grab the Virginia Governorship as well
I really could not be more dubious about this poll. I doubt if he wins, he may not make it through the primaries. He is one of the worst mayors this town has ever seen. He as been an unmitigated disater for this city.
You must spend some time in NYC.
Fake Republicans breed fake Republicans. I'd rather vote for an authentic Democrat.
Actually, I'd rather not vote at all. There is no lesser-of-two-evils when you have two leftists on the ballot.
If you think Bloomberg is bad, you should look at his opponents.
I know he's a RINO, but he's not bought and payed for by public employee unions, and he's not gonna bend over to every single person who wants money ala Gray Davis.
Ed Koch supports him. That tells you what you need to know. Liberal? Yes, but a sane liberal. His opponents are not sane liberals.
To quote Scoop Jackson "I'm a liberal, but I'm not a goddamn fool."
I feel the same way. Sometimes you gotta take it where you can get it.
I really can't stand the guy, though :)
lol!
