Washington A civilian patrol group that has been monitoring the Mexican border for illegal immigrants wants to expand its mission to the Canadian border, organizers said Tuesday.
Minuteman Project leaders said their volunteers alerted U.S. authorities to more than 330 cases this month of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States across a 37-kilometre stretch of Arizona's southern border. Now they plan to extend their patrol along the rest of the border with Mexico and are helping organize similar efforts in four states that neighbour Canada.
In the absence of the federal government doing its mandated duty to secure our borders, we will pick up the slack. Reluctantly, said Chris Simcox, a Minuteman co-organizer who also operates Civil Homeland Defense, another Arizona group that monitors illegal immigration.
We shouldn't have to be doing this, Mr. Simcox said in Washington, where he was to meet with legislators Wednesday.
But at this point, we will continue to grow this operation also to the northern border.
Mr. Simcox offered no timeline to indicate when the Canadian border patrol might begin its rounds in Idaho, Michigan, North Dakota and Vermont.
A spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol did not return a call for comment Tuesday.
We're not supportive of vigilantes, said Dan Whiting, spokesman for U.S. Senator Larry Craig, an Idaho
Secondly, if the Minutemen do set up shop, they will likely encounter warm greetings from sportsmen who hunt or fish near the border and probably cross over, albeit illegally, just to have beer and burger for lunch before continuing on their way. In Vermont, there are towns that straddle the border. Your living room could be in the U.S. and your bathroom could be in Canada. Official border crossings are frequently unmanned and people cross back and forth at will in order to go about their daily routines because it's the nature of their community.
The Minutemen will not likely find many illegals crossing in order to take up residency in the U.S. Most Canadians are too law abiding and tend to follow the immigration laws of the U.S.
ping?
We should join them, what the heck, our own government is even more lax with border security than the American gov't. Why the heck not form a joint task force of minutemen.
Except that terrorists have come across the border from Canada, thanks to their lenient immmigration laws!
Shouldn't they be putting more people in southern border? If we have a problem with canada-us border we all would know it by now.
"Beers on the Border" project...
Vigilantes???????
"Most Canadians are too law abiding and tend to follow the immigration laws of the U.S."
The problem isn't usually native born Canadians.
Most of them are in the US through the US-Mexico border.
I don't see how using a cell phone to call the Border Patrol makes one a "vigilante" unless the a$$hole calling them vigilantes wants to dissolve the border anyway.
I think a lot of these traitorous politicians are supporting an American Union with a supra-federal government just like the socialist EU.
you know, if they wanted our beer they can just say so or wanted to play hockey at the border. No need to use border as an issue.
The only one, to my knowledge, was the guy caught crossing over in Seattle to bomb LAX and he was crossing though a proper border crossing. I don't believe there have been any terrorists caught illegally sneaking into the U.S. across the Canadian border. Drug smugglers have been caught, but no terrorists.
It's very sad that Larry Craig has become the pointman on amnesty for illegals at the behest of big agricultural interests. I've alwa
"Drug smugglers have been caught,"
All the reason I need.
I wish the Left would stop misusing the word vigilante. The way they use the word in context would be like calling neighborhood watch groups vigilantes, it's ridiculous and ANOTHER example of liberal media bias and their attempt not to inform with facts but to shape public opinion.
According to FOX news this morning there will be groups in Idaho, North Dakota, Michigan and Vermont.
Another AP smear job....vigilantes my a$$....patriots doing the work of lame government officials (since 2005).
They'll be in for a shock.
Thirdly, they are NOT "vigilantes", they are minute-men observers.
