An Iraqi legislator was shot and killed by militants who stormed into her house in a middle class neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, underscoring fears that the political impasse has emboldened insurgents to step up deadly attacks in recent weeks, after a lull following the Jan. 30 elections.
Lamia Abed Khadouri al-Sakri, who was elected to the National Assembly on the ticket of Allawi's Iraqi List party, was shot and killed by militants in her house in Baghdad's Hay Aur neighborhood, police Capt. Ali al-Obeidi said.
She was the first member of the parliament elected on Jan. 30 to be slain by insurgents as they target senior lawmakers and Iraqi politicians in a bid to further destabilize reconstruction efforts in the country.
"We believe it is politically motivated. She was killed in her home," said Iraqi National Security Adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie. The attack is being investigated and police are taking precautions to protect other legislators, he said.
Hours later, Iraq's prime minister-designate presented his proposal for a broad-based Cabinet that draws in the country's main ethnic and religious groups to the presidential council on Wednesday in a step toward ending a crippling political stalemate.
"The Iraqis will find that this government has religious, ethnic, political, and geographic variety, in addition to the participation of women," incoming Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari told reporters on the steps of his office. "Now that the process has started, we will spare no effort to bring back a smile to children's faces."

is it just me or does See-B.S. use the term "emboldened" way too much. There radio especially smells funny, with "energized, emboldened, revitalized, etc." coming out of any puny, cowardly act of terrorism as some kind of bold initiative sure to mark a wave of glorious uprising to shake of their "oppressors". It is like Hanoi Jane is writing this stuff.

NOW is likely quite happy, as they probably see the oppression and victimization of women in Islamic nations simply a reflection of cultural differences.

When are the Iraqi people going to finally stand up and say enough is enough? sure, there are a great number of them stepping up, but the majority are just doing nothing; standing around and blaming others for their own internal problems.

They are starting to stand up for themselves, but it will take time...and sadly, many more will die in the process.
A woman matters for two reasons. 1] opponents may target her as a returning carpetbagger or 2] how come as a woman she was educated in Iraq when women are not allowed in schools.
I think it's that way just so the critics of FR can't get away with saying that FReepers don't believe in the democratic process to some extent, right? (grin)

In a country where education consists mostly of suppression and brainwashing, people basically have to educate themselves.
It's called reading.
Similarly, to be properly educated in America today you have to do a good deal of reading on your own, because you certainly won't get a well-rounded education from the public schools or universities. Science, math, and technical courses, maybe, but little or nothing in the humanities, history, philosophy, religion, or how to live the good life.
Perhaps this woman grew up in a household where her father and brothers let her go into the library and read books, and refrained from killing her for dishonoring them. That's all it would take.
