CONCORD -- For David Parker, the first alarm went off in January, when his 5-year-old son came home from his kindergarten class at Lexington's Joseph Estabrook School with a bag of books promoting diversity. Inside were books about foreign cultures and traditions, along with food recipes. There was also a copy of ''Who's In a Family?" by Robert Skutch, which depicts different kinds of families, including same-sex couples raising children. The book's contents concerned Parker and prompted him to begin a series of e-mail exchanges with school officials on the subject that culminated in a meeting Wednesday night with Estabrook's principal and district director of instruction. The meeting ended with Parker's arrest after he refused to leave the school, and the Lexington man spent the night in jail. Yesterday, Parker was arraigned in Concord District Court on one count of trespassing, and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. Bail was set at $1,000, and Parker was freed after being ordered to stay off Lexington school property. He is due back in court June 1. Parker and his wife, Tonia, 34, who was also in court yesterday, said the dispute arose because they asked school officials to notify them about classroom discussions about same-sex marriage and what they called other adult themes. They also wanted the option to exclude their boy, now 6, from those talks. Parker said he met with school officials to gain those assurances and then refused to leave until he got them.

It seems he was making a perfectly reasonable request of the district. People of non-Christian religions have had their children excluded from certain teachings/classes or had the curriculum altered altogether. I don't see how his request differs from others that have been granted.
And people in my area wonder why I've withdrawn my kids from the public screwal.

I like having my kids homeschooled.. The best part besides blossoming young minds, who haven't had their natural human curiosity of the world crushed....
Is the local and state school districts get paid per child that enrolls. My kids would mean many thousands of dollars for the teacher's union, and the sociological overlords in the system.
But now it seems ok if you're discussing sick and perverted sexual activities
covered up by that infamous word diversity.

Homeschooling is great. If we promote it, maybe we can increase from, say, 2% to 5% the number of kids who homeschool. But still, in the near future, the overwhelming majority of kids will be in the public schools. We need to be vigilant to do what we can to limit the harm. I live in a red state and there is a lot less of that garbage here than in Mass. Kudos to the father in the article for doing what he could to protect his kid.
What you say is true and should happen. However the fight should not be given up since there are many kids in that school who are still being indoctrinated. Schools need to be accountable and if people like the Parkers don't step up to the plate the schools will have free reign on taxpayer dollars to teach what they want and how they want. Not to say that much of that is already going on.
This is how they claim immunity from the parental notification law. Howie Carr was discussing this yesterday. One mother called in who had encountered a similar thing; she was told the materials she complained about were "not about sex."
It would be interesting to see the letters to the editor the Globe gets on this (well, maybe not interesting enough to actually buy it!).
No, he needs to continue to fight. To withdraw his child from that school would be to concede to the homosexuals. If we keep running away, then continue to win.

We need diversity in education, in the form of a diverse spectrum of available schools, all paid for through a voucher system.
In the government schools, owned and operated by the NEA and ACLU, all education has stopped. Indoctrination is the only thing that matters. Science and math accomplishments are so low that the USA depends on an influx of Chinese and Indians to fill the gap.
The NEA and the ACLU are traitor organizations working actively to destroy America. The NEA can be defeated with school vouchers. The ACLU can be defeated by judges who aren't commie leftists.
We need to defeat both of these organizations if we are going to survive as a nation.
Yet another reason to homeschool...
Yet another reason why i shake my head and get angry at out president. He refused to keep his promise about tuition tax credits which would allow low income people like myself to put my children in private schools.
I don't care much what happens as far as most issues, but until we make a direct effort to fight the power the public education lobby has over the rest of our society we will forever lose the battles for the hearts and minds of the next generation.
The ironic thing is that after the pres gave teddy k his education bill, and stumped the rest of us, teddy k crossed one side of america to the other telling everyone how bush was involved in 9-11. I get tired of defending a guy who lied to us to get in office.

I read the email exchange. Even though the parents had legitimate concerns, they behaved like arse-wipes.
As for being arrested, he was essentially staging a sit-in strike when his demands weren't being met. He was warned that unless he left he would be arrested. I'm not sure why he should be surprised at actually being cuffed.
This whole thing could have been more reasonably dealt with if the parents had 1) cooperated with the principal when she offered a meeting (instead of launching into harangues) and 2) the Father consulting legal advice instead of staging the sit-in strike that got him arrested.
Flame away. I call'em like I see 'em.
