Two years ago, during my coverage of the Terri Schiavo case, I quoted her father, Bob Schindler, who turned out to be prophetic as to his daughter's ultimate fate: "We pay great lip service in this country to disability rights, but as the degree of a person's disability increases, the level of protection that person receives decreases."

Let us not allow Terri's death to mean nothing. If her example leads to increased protections for the disabled, then we will have achieved something good through her tragedy.

The advancing Culture Of Death. Its easier to kill someone who's not young, healthy, or beautiful. They're a financial burden and when they're in a coma, they're not sentient. So a rationale has been created to kill people that don't look like society's image of a person. The disabled fall into that category. People think Terri Schiavo's case was unique but I prefer to think of it as a bellweather on society's attitudes to the least among us.

When others get to decide whose life is worth living and whose is not, it means big trouble. We're all in trouble.

As bad as it seems, the idea of inherent worth is only good until the bills come due.
