The feedback on the situation in Bangladesh was available to Nixon REALTIME from no other person than his own embassy - but he and Kissinger were so blinded by their need to befriend China that they chose to ignore it. I was a part of the Indian Army whch went into Bangladesh and, let me tell you, we truly liberated the people there - and we were really pissed when we learnt of the USS Enterprise making its threatening foray into the Bay of Bengal

I think a Soviet nuke sub was following the USS Enterprise, back then.
