PARAMUS - Victims of human trafficking are growing in numbers "right underneath our noses," North Jersey Asian-Americans were told Saturday in a workshop designed to help community activists identify and assist the casualties of this "modern-day slavery."

According to government estimates, between 18,000 and 20,000 immigrants are smuggled into the United States every year for labor or sexual exploitation - including some 4,000 coming to New Jersey - mostly from Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

It's ironic: somehow, people see it as "fair" that slaves (illegal immigrants) be granted suffrage. Once the consistency of our fundamental laws is undermined, nothing makes sense anylonger. We are a nation of laws, not men. Right now, men (and women) are encouraging the violation of these laws for economic reasons, political reasons, and a lack of will. They're seriously underestimating the impact of flouting American immigration law.

Fernando Ortiz was a ‘landscape engineer’ on Long Island who had demanded to be able to vote, on the basis that he had been paying state and federal taxes for ten years.

** WHAT BULLSHIT. No voting whatsoever. I live in Hempstead village drowing in illegals and the property taxes only go up and up and up...Ask any other Long Islander what they think about property taxes Senor Ortiz.

To your comments, I agree. My house in Medford not too far from Farmingville where Al Roker did his special on illegals being beaten and killed on Long Island.

Oh I remember when Ed Tyll went to the 7-11 on Horseblock Road and documented all the illegal activity there. It's so sad because the politicians let it happen.

Amen to what you said. It truly is unfortunate that the ambiance of area has slipped because of the PC nature of the individuals that were voted in.

Thousands of Slaves still in New Jersey? Isn't that a Northern State...how can that be.

It's a "Blue" (Democratic Party) state. All the slave states were "Blue". Slavery has a long tradition within the Democratic Party.

What can you expect from a state that has a gay Governor..or had a gay governor. ("not that there is anything wrong with being gay"...line from Jerry Seinfield episode)
