I keep hearing this, but I can't buy it. It's no trouble at all to simply say "the designer made it that way for reasons we don't understand."
That's the heart of the problem. It's irrefutable. There is absolutely no hypothetical observation in the universe that would count as actual evidence against ID, and as such there's no possible way to determine whether or not the universe actually is consistent with an ID worldview. It is a fundamentally worthless explanation.

I should have begun that post by saying: "To the rational mind, one which does not believe that the fossil record is a gigantic hoax, perpetrated by a long-running conspiracy of thousands of scientists over several generations, or that it exists but was fabricated by the gods to perplex us and test our faith ..."
