WASHINGTON – It looks like Hillary Rodham Clinton will get a challenge in her bid for re-election to the U.S. Senate seat in New York after all.

Edward Cox, a New York corporate lawyer and son-in-law of Richard Nixon, will definitely run next year for the U.S. Senate seat held by Hillary Clinton, reports next week's issue of Newsweek.

Cox will reportedly run as a fiscal conservative and environmentalist, according to the report. He is also expected to break with some policies of the Bush administration.

The man who married Tricia Nixon in the White House in 1971 worked in the Reagan administration and has advised New York Gov. George Pataki on education-reform issues.

While Clinton is reportedly not concerned about Cox upsetting the likely 2008 presidential candidate in 2006, Newsweek reports she is counting on an impressive margin of victory to position herself for the big prize.

Cox, meanwhile is banking on polls showing the former first lady vulnerable in western New York, "where they say she made promises of economic improvement that have not materialized," according to the report.

"Cox will also argue that a bipartisan state like New York needs bipartisan representation (the state's other senator, Charles Schumer, is a Dem), and that he could work better with the Bushies for New York's benefit," according to Newsweek. "So far, no well-known Republican has stepped up to take on Clinton, so Cox may quickly emerge as the favorite in the GOP primary."

While the association with Nixon may not be a positive in New York, Cox's poll shows when told he learned about world affairs by sitting in on the late president's meetings with foreign leaders, respondents viewed it as a positive.

A Quinnipiac University poll of 1,191 registered New York state voters taken April 28-May 2 showed Clinton beating Cox in a head-to-head matchup 63 percent to 25 percent.

Other findings of that survey included:

* 63 percent said they "approve" of the job Hillary Clinton is doing as senator; 28 percent said "disapprove"; 10 percent were unsure.

* 41 percent said they would like to see Clinton run for president; 51 percent would not.

* 67 percent said that Clinton deserves to be reelected; 27 percent said they she does not.

In one hypothetical 2006 Senate match-up, 60 percent said they would vote for Clinton; 32 percent said they would vote for Pataki. In another matchup, 62 percent said they would vote for Clinton; 27 percent said they would vote for Jeanine Pirro. In another, 63 percent said they would vote for Clinton, with 27 percent saying they would prefer William Weld.

About 60 percent of respondents said they wanted Clinton to pledge to serve a full term in the Senate if re-elected, thus precluding a run for president.

What the heck!!! Can't anyone keep track of their own writings anymore. So. What policies will he fight? Or, will he be another Bush sycophant? Which is it?

when they say break with Bush on issues they mean Cox will be more of a fiscal conservative than Bush is.
