SOMERSET, Ky. - A Somerset man has been charged with drunken driving - for riding a horse while allegedly intoxicated.
Millard Greg Dwyer, 42, was arrested Sunday night after he rode his horse onto a downtown street in front of an off-duty state trooper, Somerset Police Lt. Allan Coomer said.
Trooper Martin Wesley told local officers that Dwyer looked like he was about to fall off the horse.
Coomer said Dwyer admitted to being drunk and told officers that he had ridden the horse from Fishing Creek, which was about 5 miles away.
Dwyer told officers that he had consumed about a twelve pack, Coomer said. Dwyer failed sobriety tests, Coomer said, and was charged with operating a vehicle other than a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants.
A breath test showed Dwyer's alcohol level at .244, more than three times the limit, Coomer said.
Dwyer was released from the Pulaski County Dentention Center Monday, jail officials said. He faces a fine of between $20-$100, plus court costs, Coomer said.
Coomer said the arrest was "very unusual," but Somerset police have arrested others for similar violations, such as riding a bicycle and a lawn mower under the influence.
Back in the 80's, a friend was arrested on Wrightsville Beach (NC) for the same thing. He paid the fine, but protested for weeks!
Only in Kentucky!
Did they run a breathalyzer on the horse?
Reminds me of Lee Marvin in Cat Ballou.
Did they take his horse away from him?
He should claim that he was so drunk, he wasn't "operating" the horse, just riding on the horse and letting it take him wherever it wanted to go.
A living, breathing animal can drive itself.
"The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming"!
Lesson:
When drinking, don't horse around.
He stole the show as far as I'm concerned. And, he probably WAS as drunk as he looked -- or almost. Lol. He was fabulous.
It was probably true. The horse just wanted to get home and get the drunk off his back -- literally.
"I don't know whether to laugh or cry" Ping (that poor, patient horse!)
I believe the horse turned the man in.
Down here it's drunken bicycle riders and boaters.
No, no!
It's the Hottentots!
Run! Run! Hide your women and children, the Hottentots are coming!
Cheap at twice the price........here in the PRC (People's Republic of Conn) it would've been a $500 fine, probation for a year, loss of license, a charge of putting the horse at risk, classes at the local sensitivity center for "A Better Understanding of Horses and Why We Shouldn't Ride Them While Intoxicared", plus costs to board the horse while the state made a determination as to whether or not the ranch is "fit" enough for the horse to remain there.
Oh. And a "donation" to the local animal shelter.
Be very careful, your horsin around could get you in heaps o trouble!
They issued tickets for riding a bicycle and a lawnmower while intoxicated?
Sounds like this community has either too many cops with not enough to do, or not enough criminals to keep them busy.
Somerset (Kentucky) man arrested on charge of riding horse while drunk
They didn't have to. They could tell he was drunk.
