Angels up.
Arf.
Thanks. If you've never been a dog handler, you would not normally understand the bond. This story conveys that bond well.
bump
I was just about to ping her :)
Thank you for posting it.
It was very moving indeed.
How many such things happen, that we never find out.
It's good to get at least a few of these stories.
PING for a three-hanky Iraqi story.
Thanks. For all of them.
Thank you for posting this.
Does anyone know how many K-9 soldiers are serving in Iraq? And how many have been killed or wounded?
Poor puppies. The humans know what they are getting into, but a dog can't understand.
My heart bleeds for the young Marine who lost his partner. I can imagine the sorrow of losing my own dog, and his was, I must admit, a far more noble beast, so perhaps it would hurt more.
Thanks.
Aw, damn...
Rest, Marine, job well done.
Maybe its the Marine dogs that get to be the guards on the rainbow bridge, eh?
People are looking at me funny now, since I'm sittin' here in a bar with a laptop and my eyes are all wet.
I'm not so sure. Of course, dogs don't read newspapers (that we know of) but I've been impressed that dogs that are given important jobs to do really often do seem to "get it" at least a little with regard to doing some mission.
Guide dogs, assistance dogs, police dogs... and war dogs... really do sometimes seem to "get it" with regard to just plain loving the fact that they have a mission to do and they totally commit to doing it.
Semper fi. :-)

I agree, I believe they understand they have a "Job" to do and take great pride doing it. See the enthusiasm many of them display while performing their duty. They don't understand what's going on but I don't think they want to be anywhere else other than with their Handler (Dad/Mom).
One of mine in search of a "job" has become the "self-appointed guardian of the neighborhood" and makes sure everyone knows she's "on duty" once I get home.
It's nice to read a story like this today since my wonderful dog of 12 years died yesterday.
Heh... roger that... and I'd guess that a dog working with a company of Marines pretty much takes responsibility for protecting his Marines. Dogs are funny that way.
Dang... reading this story twice doesn't diminish it any.
Sorry to hear that. It was the loss of a good and faithful companion, I'm sure.
Half Rotti, half Dobie and all lover. She loved everybody, especially the kids. My 3 year old used to love to hand feed her.
If you don't mind, I'd like to post a section of my freepmail here. For some reason I think it is something that needs said:
I hate it when we lose good men to this enemy that doesn't deserve this sacrifice of their betters. These soldiers and Marines are the finest of us all. God bless them all.
These service animals, be they the dogs or the dolphins or the seals, really do yeomans' work and they can't ever know how fully we benefit from their faithfulness.
The absolute least that we can do for them is to give them the same respect we would give for any of our own fallen comrades. Seems to me that they've earned it.
Well said and very truthful. Bless them all and keep them in your prayers.
