Pascagoula Justification

Recommendation for Closure
Naval Station Pascagoula, MS
Recommendation: Close Naval Station Pascagoula, MS. Relocate its ships along with
dedicated personnel, equipment, and support to Naval Station Mayport, FL. Relocate the ship
intermediate repair function to Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity Mayport, FL.
Justification: This recommendation will reduce excess berthing capacity while allowing for
consolidation of surface ships in a fleet concentration area. Sufficient capacity and fleet
dispersal is maintained with East Coast surface fleet homeports of Naval Station Norfolk and
Naval Station Mayport, FL. Gulf Coast presence can be achieved as needed with available Navy
ports at Naval Air Station Key West, FL, and Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL. The Guided
Missile Cruisers (CG-47 Class) at Naval Station Pascagoula are scheduled for decommissioning
prior to FY 2006 and will not relocate. This recommendation also supports mission elimination
at Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity Pascagoula and reduces excess repair capacity. The
Defense Common Ground Station-Navy 2 facility can be relocated to another Naval activity or
remain in its present location as a tenant of the U.S. Coast Guard, if the Coast Guard elects to
assume property ownership of some or all of the Pascagoula facility.

Amazing hoe Conrgess will force things on the Pentagon (that cost money) that the Pentagon doesn't even want.

The more bases they close, the better.

Enough fleecing of the Taxpayer.

I feel bad about the hit that the Pittsburgh PA area is taking. Every round of base closings, we've had to fight for the 911 Airborne in Moon Township, near Pgh Intl Airport, and the Charles Kelly Center in Oakdale.

I am just glad that Barksdale AFB(Bossier City, La) is not on the list> I am no longer in the military but our local economy would be devastated. Fortunately, this base is home to a strategic component of the Airforce(B-52s). The local papers never even mentioned a problem so I guess its safe.

Any base that closes, will devastate the local economy. I feel sorry for all the areas that are effected. However, Pittsburgh has taken some big hits lately with the loss of the US Airways hub and their transfer of their call center to Latin America. It makes me sick, all this outsourcing of jobs...and neither party is stopping it. Our manufacturing base continues to decline. Well, rant off.

"outsourcing" as its called is a problem and I sympathize with the folks in that part of PA. I wish we had leaders that would tax/penalize companies that moved jobs overseas so that it would not be feasable. OF course, many on this website will accuse me of defiling the alter of Adam Smith and freemarkets. Funny thing is, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and of course T. Roosevelt had populist sentiments when it came to corporate power. I submit that each of those men were great Americans.
