Looking at Milwaukee 30 years ago the local liberals don't even know what they have lost.
Thank you Coleman Young.
Actually, the WORST towns in the northeast and upper midwest are typically not the core cities themselves (Detroit being the exception) but in the older "inner suburbs."
For the most part, that's not the case in Michigan as a whole. Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, and Benton Harbor are all "core cities".
Most of the inner burbs of Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw are working class whites(Or Middle class blacks in Southfield's case).
And the only inner burb I know of which is rougher than the city is Muskegon Heights(Muskegon). Mt Morris Twp may rival Flint, Buena Vista Twp may rival Saginaw, and Highland Park may rival Detroit, but I don't think they exceed them.

Boy, have you got that right! I'm a West Allis kid, and when I went back to see "the old neighborhood" a few years back (we left in 1970; I hadn't been back to that part of town since) it's now 100% Hispanic. I was the only white person driving down the street. I didn't feel threatened or anything, it was just weird.
Used to be all German, Polish, Hungarian, etc. Yep. The times sure are changing.
While much of what affected the city was global in nature, the city had to have had the most arrogant labor leaders. (Case in point - when the Schlitz brewery changed its recipe and lost market share and had to close one of its breweries the Milwaukee brewery went out on strike.) Now the north side predominately is unemployed blacks and the south side is unemployed Hispanics. Neither group having the will or ability to improve their fate.
I'm glad I escaped in time. I'll never live in a big city again, if I can help it. I don't know how some of my relatives stand to still live there.
And I agree; Milwaukee was one great city once upon a time. Parts of it are still very nice if you can afford them, but the bad areas have gotten much, much worse.
