CA: New hurdles for driver's license bill
Sacramento Bee ^ | May 14, 2005 | Aurelio Rojas

Posted on 05/14/2005 2:43:32 PM PDT by calcowgirl

New federal legislation setting national standards for driver's licenses will still let states issue licenses to illegal immigrants.

But Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has talked about scaling back on the number of applicants he is willing to consider - and aides now say he will not sign any license bill for up to a year.

Schwarzenegger had previously said he wanted to find a solution to cover all illegal immigrants if his security concerns were allayed.

"We cannot really provide any driver's licenses other than for people that are maybe in the pipeline and about to get their permanent residence visa or their citizenship," he said.

Latino lawmakers had been hoping the federal legislation would coax Schwarzenegger into resuming negotiations on the thorny issue.

But Margita Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Republican governor, cautioned that "it would be premature to develop any state legislation until (federal) regulations are in place because federal law could pre-empt any state law."

(snip)

By some estimates, more than a million illegal immigrants are driving without licenses or insurance in California; fewer than half are in the process of becoming legal immigrants.

Sen. Gil Cedillo, the Los Angeles Democrat who has waged a seven-year battle to allow illegal immigrants to obtain licenses, is insisting the privilege be extended to all illegal immigrants with insurance.

"At the end of the day, everybody will be driving legally, which is our goal," said Cedillo, who maintains the change would improve highway safety.

But critics say the governor should not allow any illegal immigrants to obtain licenses.

"Our view is that if you walk into a government office and announce you are here illegally, the law should be enforced," said Mike Spence, president of the California Republican Assembly.

How cute..

then they can just drive legally to the border and don't stop or return

Someone key me in on the situation in CA.

It was my read that much of the non-illegal or 1st generation of illegal "citizens" were STRONGLY behind all of the immigration repform (fixing physical 'hole' in border, stronger ID laws, stronger enforcement of welfare programs, etc)

Am I way off base?

My solution? Well, if an illegal alien walks into the DMV and announces he's here illegally, hand him over to the feds to deport him pronto. Or have our new State Border Police take care of it. Refreshingly simple, even if it offends the Open Borders Lobby zealots. Newsflash: this is still OUR country, stupid.

Its not about driving safely, its about having an ID that the illegal can use just like citizens do now. The drivers license is the standard ID for everyone. To do a lot of things you must show a picture ID and that is your divers license. That is what this whole issue is about.

Both the Federal and State governments must stop funding illegal immigration: no more free schooling, no more free health care, no more free legal aid, no more welfare, no more free police/fire protection, no "Earned Income Credit," no personal exemptions, no standard deduction or itemized deductions, no more freebies of any kind funded by taxpayers. The illegals will stop itching to come here only when we stop paying them to do so.

Poll: 62% oppose driver's license bill
IMMIGRANT SUPPORTERS FACE STRONG DISAPPROVAL IN CALIFORNIA
San Jose Mercury News, Mar. 04, 2005
A contentious measure being pushed in the Legislature to allow undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses is opposed by more than six in 10 Californians, according to a Field Poll released today.

Sixty-two percent of those surveyed disapprove of the measure, while 35 percent are in favor.

The poll also showed a deep split between Latinos and non-Latinos: Three out of four non-Hispanic whites are opposed to the licenses, while nearly two in three Latinos are in favor; the vast majority of undocumented immigrants are from Mexico.

(snip)

A total of 506 California adults were interviewed from Feb. 8 to Feb. 17 for the poll, which has a sampling error of plus or minus 4.1 percent.

Other than non-Hispanic whites and Latinos, the poll merged all other ethnic groups into a single category. That group opposed the license bill by 77 percent, while 23 percent supported it.

The survey was the first time the Field Poll, established in 1947, dedicated an entire survey to driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

The question of whether undocumented immigrants should be allowed to have driver's licenses was asked in a gubernatorial recall election Field Poll in 2003. Back then, 59 percent were against the license.

I agree. It has nothing to do with driving.

Nah, this is the way it works. The illegal goes to the crook on the corner and pays him $$$$$$. The crook then hands him a special bracelet to put on, then the other crook that works for the state, recognizes the bracelet and phonies up the computer data to issue the illegal a bona fide California driver's license.

As seen on TV.......

Cedillo attended the "People's College of Law" which appears to be a nice commie law school in Los Angeles. Villaraigosa went to the same school. Neither passed the bar, despite multiple tries.

And then there is Ms. Goldberg, our "esteemed" Assembly member, who along with her brother were cited in the 1965 Thirteenth Report of the Senate Fact-Finding Subcommittee on Un-American Activities--California.

Jacqueline Goldberg, the sister of Arthur Goldberg, came from Los Angeles to attend the university at Berkeley. She soon became the head of U.C. Women for Peace, a front organization, and was its delegate to a Moscow meeting in 1963. She was also active in the American-Russian Institute at San Francisco, cited by the Attorney General of the United States as a Communist-dominated organization, and is now a member of the Policy Committee for the next World Communist Youth Festival which is scheduled to be held in Algeria. She was a member of both the executive and steering committees of FSM, and was arrested during the invasion of Sproul Hall.

Arthur Goldberg, who was a member of both the executive and steering committees of the FSM, received his early Communist indoctrination as a member of the Youth Action Union in Los Angeles. At Berkeley he identified himself openly with the more militant Peking line of the Communist movement, proclaimed that he was a follower of the Progressive Labor Movement, and was present to hear Mort Scheer, West Coast Representative for the PLM, deliver a lecture at Stiles Hall Y.M.C.A., across the street from the Berkeley campus, in August, 1964. Scheer then resided at 6929 Acton Street, Berkeley, and Goldberg, who had also been chairman of SLATE at Berkeley, lived at 2536 College Avenue. Listed as residing at the same address were Sandor Fuchs, who was also chairman of SLATE; Mario Savio, Jack Weinberg, and Charles Artman, identified with the Filthy Speech Movement, and David L. Goins. All were arrested with Goldberg at the time of the Sproul Hall invasion.

How many others have such remarkable resumes?

Sad, isn't it? These people are so bad that one is inclined to shout cheers whenever a mere liberal is discovered--the majority of this pack is far worse.

I agree, finding a genuine liberal is rare.

These aren't people to negotiate with or compromise to.
They should be exposed for exactly what they are: the enemy (imo).

Sen. Gil Cedillo, the Los Angeles Democrat who has waged a seven-year battle to allow illegal immigrants to obtain licenses, is insisting the privilege be extended to all illegal immigrants with insurance.

I see that Gil "Seditious" Cedillo is still at it, trying to reward his Latino buddies, the illegal alien lawbreakers. Politicians like Cedillo always put race before nationality.

"At the end of the day, everybody will be driving legally, which is our goal," said Cedillo, who maintains the change would improve highway safety.

If all of the unlicensed illegal alien lawbreakers would quit driving on our roads, everybody would be driving legally and our roads would be a lot safer as a result.
