The idea that we can manage China's rise is comforting because it gives us a sense of control and mastery, and of paternalistic superiority.

I don't need this, we can't even manage ourselves!!!!!

This author is a moron. "Small but steady arms build up"? Try double digit budget increases for the last decade.

Given some form of LEADERSHIP in Washington, instead of the approach either party takes to China, we'd contain them in short order. Instead of "asking" them to remove the linkage between currencies, we would DEMAND it. Instead of "asking" them to limit their dumping of goods here in the US, we'd tariff the Hell out of them. And when they started rattling their sabres at Taiwan, we'd reposition our forces out of Korea and onto Taiwan - just as a little 'reminder'. Of course, these measures would require part of the anatomy that has been removed through lack of use in our elected leaders - firstly brains, followed by a spine.
