***"No one brings their kids to a place they consider unsafe," ***
Those parents marked by sheer stupidity do it all the time and not just at volcanoes.
You know some polynesian tribes believed if you put a human sacrifice in the volcano it kept if from erupting.
Maybe the government could create a new program where we sacrifice a couple hundred lawyers each month to America's Volcanos to keep them from erupting.

Was Hurricane Andrew too 'lily white'? |
Do devastating hurricanes need help from affirmative action?
A member of Congress apparently thinks so, and is demanding the storms be given names that sound "black."
The congressional newspaper the Hill reported this week that Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, feels that the current names are too "lily white," and is seeking to have better representation for names reflecting African-Americans and other ethnic groups.

"All racial groups should be represented," Lee said, according to the Hill. She hoped federal weather officials "would try to be inclusive of African-American names."
A sampling of popular names that could be used include Keisha, Jamal and Deshawn, according to the paper.
Why does that not surprise me?...
Whoopi Goldberg's real name is Susan Johnson. -
It's cloudy now, but sometimes it's an interesting view.
i'm sorry i don't get it.
hindsight is 20/20 but if people were told to stay out of certain areas, and they did, why should government officials say "sorry you were stupid".
i have always heard that the 57 people who died were people who didn't heed the governments warnings. this story is claiming that to not be true. if the story is wrong then i retract my statements and agree, they were stupid.
Fer Crissake. The STATE owes you an apology? Must be the same folks that think the WORLD owes then a living. Morons.
What I want to know is who is "Chantal" and who does she know in Coral Gables?
Quite a lot were outside the warning area. If it hadn't been a Sunday hundreds would have been killed.
The scientists were pestering the state to have a far larger warning area, but they refused; as it was even with the area they had the state was being trashed and criticized at the time for blocking access.
And in the weeks leading up to the eruption visible activity had declined (though the giant bulge was getting bigger, and the scientists were well aware of it.)
Good book on it (and Pinatubo, and I think Nevado del Ruiz) is "Volcano Cowboys."
Unbelievable !!!
Volcanos must be outlawed! It's all Bush's fault!!! /sarc
Deep within the brain of most humans, resides the Moron chip. This chip, when working properly, is constantly observing the person's behavior. In the event of dangerous or stupid behavior, it will go into alarm mode. Historically, this chip may be what helped the smarter cavemen to not become "food" or "stuff on a rock".
What we have here is what's known as a Moron Chip failure.
BWAAAHAAAAHAA! Good one!
Did you read the article? The victims weren't stupid; they weren't ignoring warnings; they did nothing wrong.
They were just extremely unfortunate.
Yes, some families of the victims moronically blamed the government for a volcano eruption, and the AP writer who prepared this report was careful to emphasize that angle.
But surely it is possible to scoff at the assumption that an almighty government must protect us from all possible harm, without trashing innocent people who died in a miserable way.
