An Islamic civil rights group is launching a Koran giveaway -- a campaign intended to turn a "negative incident into something more positive," it said.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations planned to hold a Tuesday morning news conference to discuss details of its campaign to offer free Korans to the American public.
CAIR said its campaign is a direct response to the controversy generated by Newsweek magazine's May 9 article claiming that U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay flushed a Koran down a toilet in an effort to "rattle" detainees.
Newsweek retracted the anonymously sourced story on Monday, after first admitting that parts of it were wrong.
CAIR said its campaign, called "Explore the Koran," involves the community-sponsored distribution of Islam's revealed text to Americans nationwide.
"It is our belief that greater access to Islam's holy book will help foster a better appreciation and understanding of Islam by ordinary Americans," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad.
Last week, CAIR called on the Bush administration to launch a public probe of the Koran-flushing allegations..."

Mabel the 3 English Versions they have are pretty much the Standard ones. At least Yusuf Ali and Pickthall are old and highly regarded ones and not That recent so don't have much PC stuff going on in them.

I think If they distributed a Koran widely in the USA it would indeed get sanitized.
Be interesting to see how they would differ if one is put out.
Will that include public schools? Just wondering if the arguments for separation of church and state will apply in this case...
Damn, I'd sure as hell get one. Then use it for target practice with my friends for a laugh. Yeah, that would make for some great pictures to take with me to the university.
Of course I expect them to let us distribute Bibles to all of the Islamic World.
It will probably be mandatory reading in public schools for 'historical' reasons, not religious ones.

But does it come with a guarantee of no carcinogenic ink used in the printing? There was a precedent, in Rabelais' "Pantagruel": they used an old book of Decretals for toilet paper, and their derrieres immediately got covered with boils and abscesses. Thus I'd be wary.
They seem to give everybody a bad time, including themselves.
I am the enemy of the terrorist within their religion/culture that their moon god religion keeps breeding.
They have no right to spill their terrorism into my life, and if they can't control their own situation, then it would be good to force them to give it up and convert them to Christianity or back to Judaism.
My view would be what would be a LAST RESORT.
I do not favor the current practice of Islam with it's terror, crippling of people, beating of women and children and mindless death.
There is something obviously lacking in that religion and culture and for me to say what we can all see only makes me practical.
I hope they take care of their own terrorists now and clean that religion up.
I don't care what anyone wishes to worship if they are peaceful, but so far Islam hasn't been proven peaceful at all and if their people keep acting up, they deserve a response.

If their religion can't turn to peace, it should be destroyed into pieces and then they should be converted to something less crazy and destructive to worship.
They have the least tolerant or respectful religion on earth.
How many of their Holy places were built on top of the Holy places of other religions they destroyed with their disrespect. In my opinion, their religion's behavior most closely follows a cancer, which is why when they act up we say they operate in cells.
