Ya, and in Europe, the Church looks the other way. Some rules are of interest to the Church, and some are not. It seems to depend on the facts on the ground, often.

Are you Catholic? Just because the hierarchs in Europe neglect their duties, doesn't mean we Catholics in the US should be lax in persuading our leaders to do the right thing.

Much of old Europe is a cesspool of hedonism. Why should we take our moral instruction from them? You think this stuff goes on in Poland or the Republic of Ireland with the Church routinely looking the other way? Or is France the only country that counts with you?

By the way anybody who wouldn't trust somebody specifically because he is not an adulterer is a jackass.

Is the objective to dissuade colleges from inviting pro-choice speakers, or to allow the local bishop grandstand?

Maybe the objective is to teach Catholics the importance of a pro-life position?

The "American Church" is liberal AmChurch which I do not support back-handedly or otherwise. It is typified by William Cardinal Keeler's entire career not by this one blatant act of Catholicism. See also Archbishop Wilton Gregory, Bishop Anthony Pilla, Roger Cardinal Mahoney, Archbishop Pilarczyk, Theodore Cardinal McCarrick (whom I trust will feel B-16's lash for lying about then-Cardinal Ratzinger's direction to American bishops NOT to allow pro-abort politicians to receive the Eucharist.

Supporting the "American Church" is like supporting the United States Senate or supporting the Supreme Court. It all depends upon whom or what we are asked to support.

I am very supportive of Bishop Fabian ruskewitz, Archbishop Eldon Curtiss, my own Bishop Thomas Doran, Archbishop Raymond Burke, Justin Cardinal Rigali, Bishop Thomas Olmsted (Phoenix) and the growing ranks of similar bishops. That their ranks are growing is due to Cardinal Rigali and the Vatica and most certainly NOT any doing of the usual gang of AmChurch suspects (the Bernardin Kumbaya clones).

I am a Yankee fan. Jason Giambi will have to do a lot more than get three hits on Tuesday night against the Mariners to regain credibility. I won't hold my breath waiting.

You've given me some news and some confusing details.
I didn't know Marymount had been previously delisted. I never read that in the story earlier.

I am not concerned about what Marymount thinks but rather what parents sending their children to Marymount and the children themselves might think on attending Marymount. Same goes for Loyola.

Are you saying the difference in treatment of the two colleges stems from the fact that Cardinal Egan is a sycophant
but Cardinal Keeler is not? Or were there other more substantial academic reasons that Marymount, to this point, is receiving harsher treatment?

I will give up Back anytime instead of Buddy Holly. Double the length of my penance if Bach.

Guess there is no acounting for taste, but then I am a bit biased! :)

A year or two ago, Keeler was probably hoping for papal incapacity or a Kumbaya replacement for JP II. He was there when B-16 was elected and probably realizes now that a marshmallow won't be pope in Keeler's remaining lifetime. p>

Even Keeler or Delaney is allowed to grandstand on those occasions, however rare, when they slip and do the right thing.

At least the Ring Cycle comes complete with lyrics. I can' forego food that long. As a diabetic, I eat small meals frequently all day. God would not want me to interfere with the ongoing process of weight loss that results or the lessening of punishment to the pancreas.

On the other hand: Rudy is a good mayor but he is an absolutely GREAT Yankee fan. Perhaps, he could run against Mrs. Antichrist for SENATE, beat her and then, assuming a Republican governor of NY, resign on an offer from baseball to be Selig's replacement as commissioner. How would Selig have handled 9/11? No contest! Rudy, hands down!

He can also be Attorney General if he likes so long as he puts his authority in trust with Senator Tom Coburn as trustee on ANY matter having to do with the American Holocaust of slaughtered babies or anything "gfay" or cross-dressing at lavender fundraissers or other previous sins.

He can be forgiven his adulteries so long as he abandons them, confesses them, is absolved of them and walks the walk on the near occasio of sin business. Since his first wife was his first cousin, that marriage is quite annullable. The priest was also a cousin. His second marriage was to Donna Hanover, herself previously divorced and, as a non-Catholic, likely not annulled before marrying Rudy. I believe judy Nathan is also previously divorced without benefit of annulment. Hence, the path through the thicket of Rudy's marital and/or extracurricular misbehavior lies through getting all of his "marriages" dissolved by Church annulment and avoiding the near occasion of sin by marrying an eligible woman of character and resuming having character in marital matters himself. Voila! Welcome back, Rudy.

Of course, if he wants to be Catholic, he has to cut out the support for abortion and various sexual perversions in others.

"Can somebody tell me why the mayor is so revered for September 11,2001?"

Read his book, "Leadership"

I disagree with his stand on abortion and lifestyle.

But he is truly a great leader. The changes he made in NYC led to the City's rebirth. I had the opportunity to meet him at a corporate function. He has my vote as "Mayor for life" If only he could be pro-life, he'd get my vote for president. Not without it.

All true. I would, however, recommend Bernie Kerik's autobiography Lost Son to get his side of the pre-Judith Regan story. Sinless, no, but an extraordinary man who rose from circumstances that were appalling to put it mildly. I have a lot of trouble imagining Bernie Kerik cross-dressing at a gay fundraiser or publicly supporting abortion.

God bless you and yours.

In fairness, since Keeler didn't object at the time of the invite, the other "best" time to object IS just before the event, when it is sure to get headlines.

Relentlessly hammering those who tolerate and even support the slicing, dicing and hamburgerization of about 50 million innocent unborn children ia always in order even if the miscreant is simply reading: Mary Had a Little Lamb. We need a tribunal, not an international one, which will be able to handle prosecutions of crimes against humanity when the time comes.

Dear Torie,

It makes a lot of sense that Catholic insitutions should refuse to honor politicians who oppose fundamental Catholic values. Remember, this is a commencement speech replete with an honorary degree from an allegedly Catholic college.

The Church has made clear that if Mr. Giuliani were invited to a forum where both pro-life and pro-abortion folks would be in attendance to present their views, in the name of open debate, that would be acceptable.

The Church has merely stated that those who oppose the most fundamental human rights values of the Catholic Church are not to be given places of honor and stature at Catholic institutions. For us Catholics, there isn't much difference between honoring Mr. Giuliani at a Catholic institution than it would be for the ADL to give an award to the local KKK.

Whether the approach backfires or not, sometimes you gotta stand on principle. Even if there's a cost.

Marymount was 'de-listed' a LONG time ago.

As to parents vs. college--that's too complex to get into. Sentient Catholic parents realize that most colleges are not Catholic--regardless of their listing.

Keeler is just as much a sycophant as Egan. What they actually DO in a circumstance such as this varies according to the perceived political circumstances and potential fallout.

IOW, the web is tangled--and you and I both know why.

Dear Torie,

"I guess nobody could speak at Catholic universities in France, or for that matter, much of Catholic Europe, where mistresses are common and accepted."

The Catholic Church distinguishes between those who commit sins (all of us), and those who uphold crimes against humanity as a fundamental right.

In one case, the sinner sins. In the other, the individual proclaims publicly that what is gravely evil is actually good and worthy. In one case, the sinner contravenes the moral law. In the other case, the individual rewrites the moral law and publicly proclaims his enormity.

In these situations where colleges have come under the sinister control of wacko liberal anti-Catholic faculties (via the Land O'Lakes silliness), the students and their families are essentially hostages held by giddy, deranged cabals of nutty professors and administrators. Since many of these are scarcely "Catholic" at all, their knowledge of the Catholic faith and Catholic culture is so absurdly minimal and illiterate that they are really not in an adequate cognitive state to deliberate on such issues as the "Catholic identity" of the college or university.

It's a truly bizarre and monstrously absurd Frankenstein situation created by the nutty liberal "Spirit of Vatican II." You simply CANNOT have people who are NOT Catholic running a Catholic college. They have NO RIGHT to the property or the students. Or to the "Catholic" name of the institution, in this case that of a Catholic saint. It's just ridiculous and absurd that this was allowed to happen.

If Keeler wants to get really bold he should threaten to shut down ALL of the chapels on campus and strip the Jesuit priests of their faculties in the diocese. NO MORE alumni weddings in the chapel. That WOULD BE interesting to see.

Dear HowlingMind-BendingAbsurdity,

"And threatened to cut off five-star dining privileges in the papal dining room during residency in Vatican City unless he agreed."

Or promised to "reward" disobedience with a "promotion" that would take the cardinal from being the Primate of the United States to being a mid-level Vatican functionary.
