LA mayor-elect breaks with governor on civilian border patrols - By MICHAEL R. BLOOD, Associated Press Writer Thursday, May 19, 2005

(05-19) 17:17 PDT Los Angeles (AP) --

Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday he opposes civilian volunteers patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border to discourage illegal immigration, putting him at odds with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"We need our Department of Homeland Security, which patrols the border ... to address the issue of security," Villaraigosa, who was elected Tuesday, told CNN.

"We have an old saying from the days of the wild, wild West ... leave your gun outside of the city limits," Villaraigosa added. "It doesn't make any sense for people to take the law into their own hands."

In comments last month that were criticized on both sides of the border, Schwarzenegger praised the so-called Minuteman Project in Arizona, which enlisted hundreds of volunteers, some armed, to patrol the Arizona border to document and report illegal crossings...

...It's a three-hour drive from City Hall to the border, but illegal immigration was only a passing issue in the mayoral campaign.

Mayor James Hahn and Villaraigosa, a city councilman, each called on the federal government to enforce immigration laws. And both said they did not believe police officers should contact immigration officials when illegal immigrants are discovered during traffic stops or arrests.

Comments from Blade Runner Nation(http://vikingphoenix.com/blog/brn/brn.html): "Newly elected mayor of Mexican ancestry opposes citizen action to stem invasion of illegals from Mexico. Federal government has been ineffective for many years, leading to citizen action, meanwhile President Bush has proposed *another* amnesty for illegal immigrants."

"This is a safe position for the new mayor until you stop to realize that no agency of the federal government including the newly established Department of Homeland Security has been effective in stopping the flood of illegal immigrants at California's border with Mexico."

"Los Angeles County disagrees [the county supervisors voted to have sheriff turn illegals over to INS]."

AV's leftist position guarantees he'll never be elected our state's next Governor.

Not that I should talk living as I do in the People's Republic of New York, but how that disqualify him when you have the Pinko Sisters as Senators?

And both said they did not believe police officers should contact immigration officials ...

And so it escalates...

How the politicos take their oath of office with a straight face escapes me.

Yeah, especially when you can't get the government to do their job. Same goes for the mayor of L.A. L.A deserves what they get now that they have elected Mr.Viagra.

But I like my title better.

L.A. mayor-elect under cloud of suspicion,
because he is.

I have noticed other Freepers posting a story with their own modified title, so I thought it would be okay.

There's plenty of room for editorial comment beneath the articles.

Thanks zarf, I knew that, but I just fancy myself a better headline writer than any wire service or newspaper.

I noticed a SOCAL news article from earlier today, the headline read Hispanic when actually Mexican would have been more accurate, but, the legacy media must conceal their deceptive agendas wherever possible.
