Food giant PepsiCo is now fizzing in damage-control mode after the company's president likened the U.S. to a middle finger.

The remarks by Indra Nooyi, an India-born woman who also serves as PepsiCo's chief financial officer, came during a speech Sunday to graduates at Columbia Business School in New York, some of whom took offense as an anti-American attack.

<<What is most crucial to my analogy of the five fingers as the five major continents, is that each of us in the U.S. – the long, middle finger – must be careful that when we extend our arm in either a business or political sense, we take pains to assure we are giving a hand, not the finger. Sometimes this very difficult. Because the U.S. – the middle finger – sticks out so much, we can send the wrong message unintentionally.

Unfortunately, I think this is how the rest of the world looks at the U.S. right now. Not as part of the hand – giving strength and purpose to the rest of the fingers – but instead, scratching our nose and sending a far different signal.<<

No Pepsi, please.

Yo Nooyi... if we're so bad, you could always pack up and return to that beacon on the hill, that land of opportunity (you are from the right caste, right?) you came from. Don't let the door hit ya on the butt.

Not anymore; they sold it off several years ago, along with Pizza Hut and KFC, as Tricon Global Restaurants, now YUM! Brands.

I hope the lady is a better CFO than she is a speechwriter. Sounds a lot what Beavis and Butthead would come up.
Side note; I just found out that my alma mater has scheduled Teresa Heinz as their yapping dog for this years grads. Blaaa!

Pepsi is nothing more than a Coke someone peed in.

I think her assessment is correct. However, much of the rest of the world WANTS to believe that we are "extending the middle finger". I think that U.S. citizens should be highly aware that we are NOT liked worldwide.

In order to quit drinking Pepsi, I would have to hear if she believes that we should alter our actions in a material way because of this perception of us.

I'm sure they own Taco Bell too. I'm just sick and tired of people trashing the USA, especially those (like some dimwitted actors) who have benefitted incredibly with wealth, influence, etc, all because of what our country is, represents and affords. I've had more than enough of it.

Pepsi has a very pro-Rat corporate culture, and has always had an inferiority complex because of Coke. And it should; Pepsi is crappy, and Coke is great and American.

The people who spend money to send their kids to the Ivy League are just fools. Crappy education, stupid PC affirmative-action, America-hating foreigner giving the address, and most people in the audience so brainwashed or dumb they don't have the sense to stand up, walk out, and get a beer and laugh at Columbia.

What a trashy bunch of PC, approval-seeking colleges.

It's funny.

Sounds like it may be time for Ms. Nooyi to sit on her middle finger and rotate.

You'll find out that's exactly what she says if you read the text of her speech.

I followed this on a bunch of blogs yesterday, and I seem to recall one which mentioned that this was not the first time she had used this speech.

Does any one else have a recollection of that?

It's an insult to use such a childlike
device, like a finger/hand to conceptualize a complicated
thing like international business/relations. Here are
intelligent kids getting a lesson from "Mr(s). Hand"
for their college graduation...what an embarassment...

I hope she can analyze business trends better than
she can make a speech....(p.s. does she realize
she is part of company that makes money on selling
a low, but pervasive addictive chemical?)
