The Miss Universe competition, that is. I'm not sure whether I'll live-blog the finale as I did last year, but I'm looking forward to the contest with great anticipation. It's in Thailand this year, on the 30th; you can read all about it here. They were a little slow to get their site up and running, but it seems fully operational now. We'll report on the betting odds as the contest draws closer. In the meantime, we'll periodically make note of some of our favorite contestants, like Miss Germany:

The media blitz is beginning, as evidenced by Yahoo News Photos' 164-photo slide show on the contest. The theme so far: Miss Universe contestants go to the beach. It's hopeless to try to pick a favorite, so I'll just post the first photo in the sequence; click to enlarge:

I noticed one other thing looking through the slide show--it seemed vaguely familiar, but I couldn't quite place it. It somehow reminded me of something...an icon, maybe:

Nah, I give up. Must be my imagination.

I agree. Miss Universe is the ONLY beauty contest in which true physical beauty is presented. I think most Miss Americas/USAs are rather plain if you ask me.

Miss Iraq was just voted "Best in Swimsuit" in the prelims; now she's the odds-on favorite to win the Miss U crown. (I see Baghdad Bob writhing in orgasmic epilepsy.)

Miss Germany appears a bit less Teutonic and a bit more....oh I don't know....is it an Arabian influence? You say that like its a bad thing. She happens to be my type in many ways.

This little tiny town, Lake Jackson, Texas, has had several beauty queens. Miss Texas Junior Miss, etc. Stephanie Guerraro made it to be one of the runner up twice in Miss USA contest. There is so much beauty in this tiny town, but it all MISSED ME! sigh....

Here's some background on Miss Germany. She's of Turkish descent.
Sad story about her father being killed.
" VICTIM OF HATRED : Asli Bayram, the newly elected Miss Germany who is of Turkish descent, revealed to the German daily Bild that her father, Ali Bayram, was a victim of hate crime and murdered by a Nazi in the city of Darmstadt on February 1994. The beauty queen recounted the tragic event: "Someone knocked on the door, my father Ali opened it and they shot him. My father was only fifty years old and he died! The perpetrator entered our house and wanted to kill us all. He was shooting like crazy and he grabbed my arm. We knew him as an extreme right-winger. He was a friend of our neighbors." The killer was sentenced to nine years in prison but was able to get out earlier. Bayram said that she is very happy living in Germany which she considers her country, and recognizes that there is good and bad in every person." (Las Ultimas Noticias, Santiago, 1/18/2005)
Meanwhile, CB correspondent Nick Can translated a Turkish-language article related to Bayram's story. Here's is Nick's English synopsis:
New Miss Germany Asli Bayram said that she has been living with pain from the murder of his father, who was killed by a Neo-Nazi 11 years ago. The new queen said that if she had known that his father's murder would be scrutinized, she would thought twice before joining a beauty pageant. She believes that mankind should seriously fight against racism, and she thinks that racist people are sick people who need therapy.
She has been traveling around Germany and Europe since the day she was crowned, and giving interviews to media representatives from all around Europe. She does not have a boyfriend and all she looks for in a man is good manners.
She is preparing for the Miss Universe pageant by exercising.
She may consider settling down in Istanbul (Turkey) in the future, as she has "two countries", but she feels "more German". She also said she misses Germany when she is away."

LOL, following that link, I'd have to say about 95% of the women in the "Miss Texas USA 2004 Delegates" table near the bottom of the page are "my kind of woman".
The blonde/blue-eyed ones don't do a heck of lot for me, but all the rest--YOWZA.
