Palm Beach County, legacy of governor likely would suffer if Scripps pulls out
Sun Sentinel ^ | May 22 2005 | Mike Clary

When the Palm Beach County Commission meets under pressure Tuesday to reconsider a critical decision on construction of a permanent home for The Scripps Research Institute, the future of the ballyhooed $800 million biomedical project in Florida is not all that's at stake.

Also on the line are several reputations.

If Scripps does carry through on a threat to go elsewhere, Palm Beach County could be labeled business-unfriendly. The state's plans to jump-start a biotech industry could evaporate like so much hot air.

And the legacies of Gov. Jeb Bush and Scripps president Dr. Richard Lerner could be diminished by a colossal failure.

Bush's fault!

Whew! I feel better now, don't you, Mike?

So the failure of the Palm Beach Commissioners to negotiate with Scripps becomes Jeb Bush's failure. *sigh*

Look, I live in occupied PBC and these fools are still trying to figure out if they voted for Buchannan. I can only assume that they have jeopardized the jobs of so many people in the area that they are beginning to try to spin the blame. Mikey figures "We've got Bush!" and the editor says "Brilliant, original thinking! Run with it!".

Well, that's how I imagine the Sun Sentinal works.

So anyway, it's hard to imagine the country screwing the pooch on this deal so badly that Scripps would want to relocate. After all, Florida has an exceptionally friendly taxation policy and particularly for businesses that help drive the local economy to the end that Scripps does via employment.

Excerpt:"At the same time, the seven-member commission also runs the risk of being branded pushovers, caving in to political and development pressure and ignoring both financial sense and the legitimate concerns of environmentalists."

Well, now we have a better idea of who wants to help destroy the economy in South Florida. Anyone surprised? Oh, and by the way, that group is still trying to figure out if they voted for Buchannan as well. Good grief...

Thoughts y'all?

I live in PBCounty and the commissars can't be so dumb as to blow this deal. It's my understanding that ground breaking is right around the corner.

Karen Marcus seems to be the only one of that bunch that does anything productive. She won't let us down.

I have several articles regarding the debacle of the Palm Beach County's stalemate response to permitting the proposed building of the plant and the arguments against where it should be located (EPA of course). Meanwhile, in Orange County, the proposed location for the plant has already been approved and is ready to go at half the cost to Scrips.

Sounds like a no brainer for Scrips. All they'll get down there is union problems anyway.

I'll do some research, and post some links (1st cup of coffee).

Me too. I'm in Boca. Lots of good FReepers in this area. Can you believe the skies yesterday? Man this place is beautiful...haven't looked past my cup-o-Colombian yet but I bet today is just as nice.

I'm at the beach on the Juno Beach/Jupiter line (US#1). Because of Karen Marcus, this area is assured of never being over-developed. She led the initiative years ago for the county to buy all this undeveloped land. It's now parks and natural areas. Without her, this would be another Singer Island - with high rise condos as far as the eye can see.

Yes it is beautiful down here. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else! I couldn't do Boca though - too many people!

It's not the governor's fault. The second address is a real good one.
