What we are dealing with here is "the relationship is central to the story".
Kojak or Bosley being black or white was never "central" to the story. Any ethnicity could play those roles.
The fact that Huck was white and Jim was black had everything to do with the story between them.

That is precisely correct. A story about a white American run away slave in the 19th century does not make sense. Changing role races in this story is a distraction that reduces it to an absurdity.
I reread Conrad's "Nigger of the Narcissus" last night and it stuck me that it would be impossible to make a play or movie based on it because of the title.(I suppose Dave Chapelle could make a skit about it)
We are burying our own culture in political correctness.
