McDonalds pays $10m damages
Silicon Valley (PTI): Fast food giant McDonalds will pay $10 million to 24 groups, including the International American Gita Society, as part of a settlement of lawsuits.
McDonalds has been charged with misleading Hindus and vegetarian consumers by wrongly describing its French fries, containing beef additive for flavouring, as vegetarian.
McDonalds recently informed the Gita society that it is among the groups receiving the settlement money, the US-based non-profit organisations spokesperson, Ramananda Prasad, said.
We are such a small organisation, and nobody supports us, the temples are busy with their own activities, Prasad, who founded the society in 1984, said.
The society will get $50,000 from McDonalds. The money will be used for developing a website on the Gita, especially a Gita for children, Prasad said.
A US court approved the 24 groups after a Seattle lawyer, Harish Bharti, filed a class lawsuit against the company, accusing it of deception in its claims of cooking fries in 100 per cent vegetable oil.
The maximum compensation of $1.4 million, or 14 per cent of the award, goes to Vegetarian Resource Group, followed by $1 million to the North American Vegetarian Society.
They've got enough loot to eat at fast food joints...
Meaning more break-ins, vanadalism, arson, and death threats against farmers and scientists.
McDonald's fries are the most OVERRATED food known to man. Skin fries at the local bar are far superior to Mickey Ds sorry excuse for fried potatoes.
How much does it cost to buy a Quiki-Mart franchise?
I have never eaten at a McDonald's in my life. Tell me, what am I missing out on?
Here here! I agree. You know what's wierd is that Jack in the crotch's fries are pretty good now that they changed the recipe.
How much did the lawyers get?
Money! If you spill hot coffee or over eat or are offended by the food description!
I can't understand the basis in law for a vegetarian group profiting from the injuries received by someone eating a freakin french fry. It's always the liberals who are bleating about the lack of civility in this country, yet they're the ones who eat a bad french fry and consider it a crime.
I can understand why it's wrong to say a product has no animal products in it when it's a french fry, but someone eating fast food has no right to complain about the ingredients not being "pure". Any mophead can tell you you never know what's going in your mouth when you eat anything you haven't prepared yourself.
I agree but how could MCD be so stupid and think they would get away with something like that.
Give me a break! I'm not a McDonalds fan. Let these Hindus and vegetarians learn how to read. I don't feel sorry for them at all. I side with McDonalds on this one.
If you have never eaten at a McDonalds and you don't feel like you've missed anything, then I guess you aren't missing out on anything.
Oh wait...is this where you wanted someone to try to convince you to try a meal at McDs so you could smugly inform them that you care too much about your body to fill it with such junk.
Actually I like junk, but I prefer quality junk.
Two questions:
Wonder what part of the cow that additive came from?
How did the lawyers find out there was beef additive in the cooking oil?
My understanding of the McDonald's frenchfry process is that the fries are dipped in corn sugar (dextrose) which makes them look uniformly nice when cooked in their 100 percent vegetable oil. Grandma used to do the same thing when she sprinkled sugar on bacon.
What makes it misleading is that they also cook other things in that same oil, such as their Chicken McNuggets (made from mechanically deboned meat).
So, It starts off as 100 percent vegetable oil, but doesnt end up that way.
On the other hand, some molecule of water or fat from their meat from a fried hamburger could fly up and into your coke.
Oh, now I am ritually unclean for that too!
Don't assume that of Alloute. He's cool.
What part of meat, potatoes, tomatoes etc. do you think are not nutricious?
Any grown American man who has not eaten at a McDonald's even once in his life is well... odd.
"I have never eaten at a McDonald's in my life. Tell me, what am I missing out on?"
I've eaten at McDonald's three times in one day before...
