NYT Co. to Axe 190 Jobs, Including Journos, at 'Times' and 'Globe'

CHICAGO The New York Times Co. will shed 190 employees, mostly at its flagship newspaper, the company announced Wednesday.

In a statement, the company said the reductions will include "fewer than two dozen" employees in The New York Times newsroom. About two-thirds of the reductions will occur at the Times, with the rest coming from the company's New England Media Group, which includes The Boston Globe.

Newsroom reductions will come from a "voluntary reduction program," the company said.

The reductions should be implemented by the end of August, Times Co. said.

All told, the reductions amount to less than 2% of the company's total workforce, it added.

"Staff reductions will be carefully managed so that they do not adversely affect journalistic quality, the smooth functioning of the Company's daily operations and the ability to achieve its long-term strategic goals," the company's statement said.

The Times Co. said it had not yet calculated how big a charge against earning it will have to take because of the staff reduction. It said it will likely make the size of that charge public at the Mid-Year Media Review in June.

"will shed 190 employees..."

That seems like an act of anti-Americanism, if I ever saw one.

I betchya they are hiring overseas, though.

Wait a minute - where's the outcry of a profitable organization laying people off? Are the fatcats at the top taking a pay cut? Or are they just getting richer while others suffer? Is Paul Krugman or Tom Friedman taking a pay cut?

And why is there not a journalist union who can fight these "outrageous" layoffs?

I can wait for all these questions to be posed by the media!

Sure, go ahead. This could be fun.

I'll start with the entire editorial staff. Next are the self-proclaimed "cheerleaders" for gay marriage.

But gee, I have to think about it again......190 jobs.

Oh well...That's a shame.

I recommend a FIFO approach....but I suspect they will use the affirmative action approach - white males first out.

Ummm, excuse me, but I find the term, "humanity" to be phallo-centric and sexist.

I prefer "wombanity."

In other words, we'll only fire employees who are to the right of Che Guevara so we can continue on our mission of turning the United States in the Great Marxist Nanny State.

I got it. 2% is nothing, they will get that from retirements and normal loss.
