Should Pat DeWine (son of Sellout Senator) be defeated in June 14 Special Election? (Hugh Hewitt)
Hugh Hewitt dot Com ^ | May 24, 2005 | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 05/25/2005 3:59:18 PM PDT by FreedomSurge

There's a special election to fill a safe republican Congressional seat in Ohio's 2nd District on June 14th, three weeks out. State Rep Tom Brinkman is running. Against Pat DeWine. Senator Mike DeWine's son.

Though I do not favor visiting the sins of the father on the son, conservative primary voters who just watched DeWine the Elder throw some fine conservatives under the bus might not be as forgiving. DeWine the Younger is the favorite. If you are a Ohio voter in the 2nd, send me an e-mail as to whether this is an issue, and especially if Tom Brinkman makes it one. Send any info to hugh@hughhewitt.com.

Pat's a U of M Law grad, so he's got that going for him. Perhaps he can help his dad draft the next "deal" when he gets to Congress.

Update: Many e-mails on this wide-open race. Here's one:

"Hello Mr. Hewitt,

Based on the signs in my local neighborhood, it would appear Jean Schmidt ( http://www.jeanschmidt.com/ ) is the only candidate for the open slot. She is a former state representative and so has some name recognition. I do live in her old state house district and so I had assumed that all these signs could be a local bias. However, about two weeks ago I was driving Back to Cincinnati from Athens, Ohio, and based on the number of campaign signs I saw on that trip I would say she is the leading candidate. I saw one sign for former Congressman Bob McEwen, one for DeWine and about half a dozen for Schmidt.

-- John S."

Here's another:

"We live in Ohio's 2nd district. Below is a repeat, as best I can remember, of the email I sent to Mike DeWine. Senator,

(Some stuff about M. D. not getting any more of my support, etc.)

Then I told him I am in the 2nd district and that the fact that Pat DeWine's father is Mike DeWine would keep me from voting for Pat.

J.B.

Thanks for the heads up about Brinkman (I was wondering whom you would recommend.) "

Actually, I didn't mean to recommend Brinkman. I don't know enough about the race to have a recommendation. I was just curious if DeWine the Elder's mistake would hurt DeWine the Younger, and it has. How much we don't know.

Even though there is only 3 weeks to election, Pat DeWine needs to be defeated.

Ohio Freepers need to decide who to support and fast.

Yes. This is how the game must be played. There is too much at stake to play nice. These arrogant Senate "centrists" need to be taught a lesson. Nice lessons have no impact. Ugly ones do. Screw Pat DeWine.

I'm in the first district of Ohio, but I hope Pat Dewine loses to Tom Brinkman. The Dewine in the Congress race "sounds" like a Conservative, but know this about him: "Pat DeWine was sworn in as a Hamilton County Commissioner on January 3, 2005"

And that is a position that he hasn't given up to make a run for Congress. I guess some could say that he's short changing Hamilton County by job hopping, and I wouldn't disagree.

Just his name alone and this fact would lead me to take a long look at his Republican primary opponent. After all, Mike Dewine probably "sounded" like a Republican at one time also.

If I'm a betting man, I'm NOT betting on a Dewine anymore. I'm not betting on a Voinovich either. Life is too short to be represented by fake Republicans!

Any other reasons to support Brinkman? If he has the best chance of beating DeWine I will send a check.

You can't split the vote between two.

I looked at Brinkman's website as soon as it was posted here and it took about two seconds to decide to send $25 and email HH (who still had an hour on the air last night) on it. Now Brinkman has the head start and the mo. Apologies for overlooking any other possibly worthy candidates. But there is only three weeks and that is not time to dither over whom to support.

I sent an email to Senator DeWine yesterday and told him I was ashamed that he had abandoned the Republican party to side with Byrd and the other dwarfs.

I told him I believed his actions made one DeWine in DC to be one too many and with his son in consideration, two DeWines would be unbearable.

After I sent the email, I contacted Jean Schmidt's website and asked for a yard sign. She had always been a reliable Republican voice in Columbus.

I like Schmidt, McEwan and Brinkman in that order. DeWine would be last.

This is what I have from his site.

"When I ran for State Representative five years ago, I made three fundamental promises to the people in my district. I vowed to do whatever I could to fight for limited government, to fight for lower taxes, and to fight to end abortion.....I have been relentless in my pursuit of lower taxes, reduced spending and elimination of waste in the State of Ohio. No one else in this race has my record of saying “NO” to taxes. Every candidate in this race will tell you that they are “conservative” but when the rubber hits the road, I am the only one with a proven voting record.

I am not from Ohio. I cannot vote. I will send money and may encourage donor friends to do the same. However, the Ohio Freepers need to congeal around one of the alternatives. It does no one any good to split the support.

I think three candidates have a chance to win. Brinkman, Schmidt, and DeWine. (McEwen will lose - he has a check bouncing scandal that will tag him - and all his endorsements are top-heavy Washington types)

Schmidt used to head a Right to Life Branch and is a former state rep. She votes pro-2a. She did however vote for a sales tax.

Brinkman is a current state rep. He's endorsed by GOA(Gun owners of America) and has been a leader on tax issues as well as he 100% anti-tax. He's also strongly pro-life. I met Brinkman at a gun rights convention near Cincy back in 2001 and he seems like a straight shooter to me.

I sent $25 to Brinkman's campaign.

Sounds like there are a couple of pretty good folks running, and I don't want to cut out Ms. Schmidt out, but it looks like Brinkman edges her out with just a little bit more conservatism.

So, I sent Brinkman a small donation via PayPal and also a note as to why.

Volunteered to do some writing for Brinkman. Have been scanning local news to dig some dirt on DeWeenie Jr. So far:

1. U.S. Senators, including Trent Lott, have contributed heavily to his campaign. 2. While his wife was pregnant with their third child, he knocked up some bimbo. Now divorced and shacked up with the bimbo. Will keep freepers posted.

Well, the Bible says that the sins of the father will be visited on the child, but each individual has to decide.

Personally, I am so fed up with the rhetoric of the self-righteous Democrats, I am ready for a scortched earth policy. I don't want to lie like they do, but I want to shut down the propaganda.

Graham, McPain, et al, think the fact they have to work with Dems means they have to cave to Dems. I will be glad to work with them when they actually learn that they are in the minority because we, the voters put them there, and that they will get nowhere with their blatant and repeated lies and policies of personal destruction.

The 7 turncoats can't seem to understand that they have just justified all the damaging rhetoric and obstruction of the last 4 years.

It's time to put down the mike and the camera and pick up a torch.
Just my one opinion.

It sounds as if Republican candidate DeWine sired a child out of wedlock shortly after the divorce from the mother of his three other children. Does every Republican voter in the district know this?

Hewitt is an evangelical and does not believe in visiting the sins of the father to the son.

However the strongest arguments used during the call in segments include: the judges thrown under the bus had sons also; DeWine senior is a politician and would have known that there would be a reaction against his son but didn't care; the son would have learned his values at the knees of the son therefore is bound to be a bad egg.

True, true. But Dubya didn't have a kid out of wedlock during (or after, for that matter!) his marriage. If Mr. DeWine can betray his wife, he can certainly betray the conservative movement.

What worries me is that the conservative vote could be equally split between Brinkman and Schmidt, allowing DeWine to slip in even if a majority of Republicans in the 2nd are strongly against him.

We need to send BOTH of the DeWine's a message. I was at Great American Ballpark along with 40,000 others when W appeared last year in Cincinnati and our Senator who is up for re-election in 2006; shared the stage. Now, he's decided not to support our president in getting his federal judges approved. Additionally, he is against drilling in Anwar and you can bet he will hold up the Energy Bill until this is resolved to his and the democrats satisfaction. He is also against any legislation to secure our borders. Is it possible to get Betty Montgomery or Ken Blackwell to change their minds and challenge Mike DeWine for his seat? With Voinovich AND DeWine, Ohio deserves a true conservative and not more RINO's. As far as his son is concerned, Jean Schmidt has an outstanding record on conservative issues and wants to secure our borders as part of her agenda. Furthermore, it's about time we elected a conservative female to represent perhaps the most conservative district in the United States. Run Jean Run!
