Mr. Narcissus Goes to Washington (Peggy Noonan)
The Opinion Journal ^ | May 26, 2005 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 05/25/2005 9:13:45 PM PDT by Irish Rose

Mr. Narcissus Goes to Washington It's springtime, love is in the air, and 14 senators are gazing at the mirror.

Thursday, May 26, 2005 12:01 a.m. EDT

You've heard the mindless braying and fruitless arguments, but I'm here to tell you the facts, no matter what brickbats and catcalls may come my way. Lindsey Graham defied the biases of his constituency to do what was right, not what was easy. Robert Byrd put aside personal gain to save our Republic. David Pryor ignored the counsels of hate to stand firm for our hopes and dreams. Mike DeWine protected our way of life. These men are uniters, not dividers.

How do I know?

Because they told me. Again and again, and at great length, as they announced The Deal. And I believed them, because I am an idiot. Or as they might put it, your basic "folk" from "back home."

Listening to them I thought of some of the great and hallowed phrases of our Republic. "The rooster who thought he brought the dawn." "The only man who can strut sitting down."

I know they're centrists, but there is nothing moderate about their self-regard. And why should there be? I personally was dazzled by their refusal to bow to the counsels of common sense and proportion, and stirred that they had no fear of justified insult ("blowhard," "puffed up popinjay") as they moved forward in the halls of the United States Senate to bravely proclaim their excellence.

Actually, for the first few lines, she was scaring me. This turned out to be a very good article. Most politicians need their inflated egos pricked.

She hit this right on the head! The endless photo ops and tiresome pontificating by these blow-hards about how the 'Traditions' of the Frat, masquerading as some sort of quasi legislative body called the Senate of the United States, had been preserved and that somehow we were all the better for it, were truly and utterly nauseating.

But my favorite was Lindsey Graham, who said, "I know there will be folks 'back home' who will be angry, but that's only because they're not as sophisticated and high-minded as I am. Actually they're rather stupid, which is why they're not in the Senate and I am. But I have 3 1/2 years to charm them out of their narrow-minded resentments, and watch me, baby." Oh, excuse me, that's not what he said. That's only what he meant.

Most accurate. Senator Graham is following the path of our unlamented former Senator John Edwards, whose ego far exceeded his political talent.

As usual Peggy Noonan nails it. She sees these self-serving egomaniacs for what they are. And it's always the same handful of them who hog the cameras and try to pass themselves off as heroes.

A humble Senator like James Inhofe - you just don't see
his mug all over the cameras. The same holds true for Senator Brownback.

Watch it!! I'm a Peggy Noonan fan. She is a national treasure, and far from an egotist.

If you don't care for her, fine. But, don't label her for something she isn't. That is a typical left wing trick.

"Public figures use the press to laud themselves with no embarrassment, no sense of what is important, and no sense of modesty. If Jack Webb were here he would deck these guys. Broderick Crawford would bark "10-4" and hit them on the head with his Highway Patrol walkie-talkie."

I have never liked Noonan's fluffy, airy, style of writing.

However, in this one she has taken out a lot of the fat and is telling it more like it is.

This one's pretty good.

Actually, what Mr. Graham said was, "People at home are gonna be mad at me for a while." He said he decided to support the deal because "kids are dyin' " in Iraq, "Social Security is comin' up," and "this is a lot bigger than me."

What does any of this have to do with what he did ?

I guess I'm about to criticize her personally, but I have never felt comfortable about Peggy Noonan. In my mind she epitomizes snobbery, right down to the effected voice, insincere smile, tilted head stance, and occasional hair flip. My guess is that working around her would be maddening, but hey, I could be wrong.
On the speech, I think enough time has passed to conclude the sky did not fall as a result. Peggy didn't like it but there was no reason to panic. She thought the speech would somehow give justification to our enemies that we are "immature." Nonsense.

I will ask again: where has anybody personally attacked Peggy Noonan?
From all I've read on this thread, we are simply disagreeing with her brain-dead remarks on Bush's inaugural, and her equally dopey defense of those remarks.

Peggy is simply out of step with the vast majority of the rest of her party. It is she who is driving a wedge into the GOP, not those of us who, for the life of us, are trying to figure out what the hell has come over her.

Noonan jumped the shark last Thursday.
She lost me last summer when she bemoaned the president's campaign focus on the war, urging him to change the tone and make clear that he "hates war, really hates it, and loves peace." Americans were growing tired of the drama of the times, tired of war, and want to get back to their lives, she wrote. They want drama on a personal level but not a historical level ... blah-blah-yadda-yadda. It was one in a series of columns filled with similarly self-absorbed touchy-feely dreck. (Speak, Softly, Mr. Bush)

I always found Noonan to be a bit cloying, melodramatic, pretentious, and too reliant on flowery emotion at the expense of logic, but I still read her stuff because of her obvious writing skills and her earlier work was often so damn good(What I Saw at the Revolution was an especially good book). Now, though, I usually scroll past her articles because she mostly bores the heck out of me.

I agree with her point... that politicians have inflated egos. The "moderate" 14, Frist, George Allen, Chuckie Schumer. They're all like that. Modest and humble public servants join monasteries instead of running for office.

And she rights nasty columns about speeches that she didn't get the chance to right... if that isn't an inflated ego, I don't know what is.

You're calling fits of pique and jealousy "INFLATED EGO" ?

Noooooooooooooo....that's NOT it. The camera hogging, microphone swallowers, who pound their chests like gorillas, weep for the camera, on cue, affect accents they've long ago sloughed off, and believe that they and they alone know what's what, are a different breed.

Peggy has her own affectations ( using 14 year old girl mannerisms, being what is known in female circles as "the be sweet" girl voice, etc. ), which don't fall into the same category at all.

And yes, she IS still a HACK, IMO, but this column was very well well done and true.

I am constantly amazed. A conservative values the individual. Values individual thought. Individual opinion.
Yet have another conservative stray off the Party reservation and the howling begins. Not at all dissimilar to the dogmatics of the left.

You don't have to agree with anything Peggy Noonan writes. You don't have to like her style. But the lady surely does have style.

A Peggy Noonan column is never going to be mistaken for anyone else's. And she always makes her point. Her a point. And it is always reasoned. Individually.

I think she may be a conservative. An actual one.

In keeping with her article, the way to straighten all this phoney baloney out in Congress is to remove the TV cameras. Make them have to sprint outside to tell us how wonderful they are. Maybe a few will get trampled in the stampde.

I don't know if politicians have ever been modest, but I know they have never seemed so boastful, so full of themselves, and so dizzy with self-love.

That's because, in the cases of the 'maverick Republicans, and just about any Democrat, they're continually getting their a$$es kissed by the MSM.

That's a good summation of Noonan. It's funny reading some of the haters here. One mark of a good stylist is he or she writes in an original style that one could notice without even reading their by-line. Noonan was a legitimate part of the Reagan Revolution. That alone is more than any of her haters can say for themselves. Moreover she is a fine stylist. Sure she mentions details that aren't simply on-the-nail--that's called being a writer, and using your writer's eye to bring in other elements that illuminate the subject. I don't understand why people here have a problem with her for doing precisely what an op-ed writer is supposed to do--bring their unique perspective to a subject. People don't have to LIKE her, but she is an accomplished woman who can't be faulted for her writing abilities, unless those complaining about them can point to their books, columns and speeches for Ronald Reagan.

Thank you, Peggy:

Politicians are in politics. They are less self-denying than self-aggrandizing. They are given fame, respect, the best health care in the world; they pass laws governing your life and receive a million perks including a good salary, and someone else--faceless taxpayers, "the folks back home"--gets to pay for the whole thing. This isn't public service, it's more like public command. It's not terrible--democracies need people who commit politics; they have a place and a role to play--but it's not saintly, either.

I don't know if politicians have ever been modest, but I know they have never seemed so boastful, so full of themselves, and so dizzy with self-love.

No kidding. Now she's the shiznit. How quickly the kneejerk right forgets.

"I don't know if politicians have ever been modest, but I know they have never seemed so boastful, so full of themselves, and so dizzy with self-love."

And that is a GREAT quote. Noonan isn't always a suckup to the right, but she's always marching with it.
