I think they ought to stay in the PI if they are capable

My guess is that they aren't, have finally admitted as much to themselves, and that's why they stepped back into sight.

There was one about 10 years ago when a Japanese soldier offered to surrender, but only if his superior officer gave him the order. The lieutenant in charge of his unit was still alive and hauled out of retirement to order the guy to surrender.

I guess it's not all that hard to believe, it'll be amazing if it turns out to be true.

Thank you for the fascinating information. I had no idea that their surrender would be that formal.

Hmmm, I guess that episode of Gilligan's Island wasn't so fanciful after all.

Your picture of the Confederate soldier reminds me of my great-great grandfather who was one of those confederate cavalry men who never surrendered. He was one of General Joe Shelby's troops who buried their Stars and Bars in the Rio Grande and crossed over into Mexico.

"Took them sixty years to surrender? I can admire that, unlike the French who surrender in 60 seconds! :-)"

The 60-second Frenchies were the holdouts...
